Exciting New Attractions at the 2024 Iowa State Fair: Cowboy Boot Camp and Goat Playpen!
Iowa's biggest summer event is almost here! The Iowa State Fair runs from Aug. 8 to Aug. 18, open daily from 8 a.m. to midnight, with adjusted hours on the final day.
Location: East 30th Street and East University Avenue, Des Moines
New Events:
Glass blowing by Hot Glass Academy
Kids Can Cook demonstrations
Cowboy Boot Camp
Llama Love: Hooves on Adventure (pre-registration required)
Goat playpen
New Foods: Over 80 new foods, including bacon cheeseburger eggrolls, cheeseburger corn dogs, pulled pork snacks, deep-fried bubble gum, and pepperoni chips. A tasting event will narrow down the best new food.
Improvements:
Additional ADA parking
Restroom upgrades
More water bottle filling stations
New shade areas, picnic tables, and benches
Ticket Prices:
Advance adult tickets (12+): $11
Advance children tickets (6-11): $7
Prices increase once the fair starts
Free entry for children 5 and under
Savings: Purchase tickets before Aug. 8 to save $5 on adult tickets and $3 on children’s tickets. Fair value packs available until July 24 online or Aug. 7 in person.

Aug. 3: 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Aug. 4: Noon - 4 p.m.
Aug. 5-6: 8 a.m. - 6 p.m.
Aug. 7: 8 a.m. - 8 p.m.

Phillips 66 Employee Arrested for Robbery in Ames
An Ames man, Antonio Cartez Evans, has been arrested for robbing the Phillips 66 convenience store where he worked. Evans, 42, is charged with First-Degree Robbery and First-Degree Harassment. The incident occurred at the South Gate Expresse on Airport Road around 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
According to police, Evans asked a coworker for help retrieving a knife from a display case, then threatened the coworker with the knife, demanding access to the store safe and cash register. Evans allegedly left the store with cash, cigarettes, and other items, fleeing on a bicycle.
Police located Evans near his residence shortly after. He admitted to taking cigarettes and approximately $200 in cash. He is currently held at Story County Jail on a $27,000 cash bond and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on July 10.

David Carr Wins Big 12's 2024 Bob Bowlsby Award
David Carr has been awarded the Big 12's 2024 Bob Bowlsby Award, as announced by Commissioner Brett Yormark during the State of the Conference address in Las Vegas. This prestigious accolade honors a male and female student-athlete who exhibit exceptional leadership and excellence. Carr, who led Iowa State wrestling to its first Big 12 title since 2009 and a fourth-place finish at the NCAA Championships, was also named Big 12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year and Iowa State Male Athlete of the Year.
In addition to his athletic achievements, Carr completed his master's degree with a 3.74 GPA and has been a four-time Academic All-Big 12 selection and NWCA Scholar All-American.
