53rd Annual Octagon Art Festival Returns to Downtown Ames

The Octagon Center for the Arts will host its 53rd annual Octagon Art Festival on Sunday, Sept. 22, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in downtown Ames. This free event is perfect for families and art lovers, featuring nearly 90 artists from across the Midwest. Attendees can enjoy live demonstrations, such as pottery, weaving, and painting, offering an educational component to the festivities.

In addition to live performances by musicians and dance groups, the festival will offer a kids' craft tent for hands-on activities. A variety of food and beverage vendors will also be available throughout the day, providing a fun and artistic experience for all ages.

ISU Local Food Festival

The Iowa State University Local Food Festival is an annual celebration of local food and healthy living. This event centers around incorporating local foods into your daily meals, empowering healthy lifestyles, and sustainability-focused activities to engage students, faculty and staff to make connections with Ames and nearby communities. The festival features educational displays, locally grown and produced products for sale by local vendors and ISU clubs, and recipe samples using fresh-picked produce from the ISU Horticulture Research Station.

24th Street Closure at Railroad Delayed

The planned closure of 24th Street at the railroad crossing, initially set for Monday, Sept. 23, has been postponed until further notice. The delay affects the removal and replacement of the railroad track approaches, which will be coordinated with Union Pacific Railroad.

Once rescheduled, the closure is expected to last two weeks. During this time, motorists will be detoured via Bloomington Road and Grand Avenue. The reconstruction of 24th Street is in its final stage, with work being contracted by Con-Struct.

Iowa State Honors 2024 Hall of Fame Inductees

Six former Iowa State athletes were inducted into the Iowa State Athletics Hall of Fame on Friday at the Sukup End Zone Club. The Class of 2024 includes Rich Binek (wrestling), Melvin Ejim (men's basketball), Victoria Henson (volleyball), Kelechi Osemele (football), Lyndsey Medders (women's basketball), and Mike VanArsdale (wrestling).

Ejim was unable to attend due to professional basketball commitments but will be honored at a future event. Medders, a two-time All-Big 12 selection and national assists leader in 2006, expressed her deep pride in joining the Hall of Fame. VanArsdale, a three-time All-American and 1988 national wrestling champion, also shared his excitement in receiving this prestigious honor.

Established in 1997, the Iowa State Athletics Hall of Fame has now enshrined 210 athletes.

Iowa State Dominates Arkansas State 52-7, Campbell Ties Wins Record

Iowa State cruised to a 52-7 win over Arkansas State, improving to 3-0. With the victory, Matt Campbell tied Dan McCarney for the most wins in ISU football history at 56.

Rocco Becht threw for 204 yards and two touchdowns, while Carson Hansen scored two rushing touchdowns, leading the Cyclones to a 31-0 halftime lead. The Cyclones tallied 490 total yards, including 237 on the ground, and their defense allowed just 182 total yards, forcing two interceptions.

Iowa State faces Houston next weekend.

Cyclones Sit in Fourth After First Round of Schooner Fall Classic

Iowa State opened the Schooner Fall Classic in fourth place, shooting a 279 (-1) in the first round. Freshman Alexandra Vidal led the Cyclones with an impressive five-under 65, placing her second overall after six birdies and a 31 on the back nine. Pammy Chookaew shot a two-under 68, finishing tied for sixth.

Keeley Marx and Karisa Chul-Ak-Sorn each carded a 73 (+3), while Nichakorn Pinprayoon rounded out the team with a 75 (+5). The Cyclones trail tournament leader Auburn, who shot a seven-under 273, by six strokes. Iowa State continues with the second round today at 9:20 am.
