How Much Do You Know About Ames?

Question: What year was the Ames Auto Garage built, and why is it significant to Main Street?

(Answer at the bottom of the newsletter)

Lane Closure on 13th Street for Reconstruction Work

Starting Tuesday, Sept. 3, Curtiss Avenue from 13th to 16th Street and the westbound lane of 13th Street will be closed for reconstruction, weather permitting. The Curtiss Avenue closure will last for four to five weeks to allow for pavement removal and replacement. The lane on 13th Street will reopen daily after work hours.

The City of Ames has contracted Manatts, Inc. for this project, which includes storm intake updates, spot sewer, water main replacements, and ADA-compliant sidewalk ramps.

Ames Animal Shelter Faces Overcrowding Crisis Amid Cat Hoarding Cases

The Ames Animal Shelter is dealing with severe overcrowding as it cares for approximately 1,000 pets each year in a nearly 30-year-old building. The situation worsened on August 5th when 22 cats and a dog were taken in from a single residence, adding to the shelter's already stretched capacity.

With space running out, the shelter is now using a trailer to manage overflow. The shelter is currently seeking adoptive homes, especially during kitten season when adult cats struggle to compete for attention.

Inside Lanes on Airport Road to Close for Pavement Work

Starting Wednesday, Sept. 4, the inside lanes on Airport Road between University Avenue and South Riverside Drive will be closed for pavement removal and replacement, weather permitting. Traffic will shift to the outside lanes, and the work is expected to last two to three weeks.

Iowa Earth Works will handle the initial pavement removal, followed by paving operations by All Star Concrete. Motorists are advised to allow extra travel time and exercise caution in the construction zone.

For more details, contact Hafiz Ibrahim, Civil Engineer II, at [email protected] or 515.239.5245. Visit City of Ames Construction Updates for general updates.
