Ames Celebrates Independence Day with Festive Fourth of July Parade

Yesterday, Main Street in Ames was filled with joy and celebration as the community came together for the Fourth of July parade. Highlights of the event included members of the ACAC swimming club, Ames Fire Department, and Mayor John Haila distributing candies to children. The parade also featured performances by drummers from Ames High School marching band, the Ames Municipal Band, School of Rock, and dancers from Robert Thomas Dancenter and Bold Dance. Taekwondo demonstrations by Ames Parks & Recreation and gymnastics performances by Elite Gymnastics added to the excitement. The parade also showcased the 2024 Rose Queen Natalie Nichols, Little Miss Rosebud Violet Robak, and Elyn Bartine waving to the crowds. Arbor Monkees tree services and Plucky Paws service members joined in, distributing candies and greeting spectators.

Kidnapping Suspect Arrested in Ames After Community Tips

Robert Gonzales, a 52-year-old Des Moines man, was arrested in Ames on Friday night on charges of second-degree kidnapping and first-degree burglary. Gonzales is accused of breaking into a 73-year-old woman’s home in the Easter Lake neighborhood on June 26th. The victim reported being restrained and forced to withdraw money from various ATMs in Des Moines, Altoona, Ames, and Boone before being returned home and having her car stolen. Gonzales had previously been in the woman’s home to repair an appliance. Her vehicle was later found abandoned at a Walmart parking lot on East 14th Street. Gonzales was apprehended on June 28th in Ames after community tips led police to a home on East 9th Street. He is currently held in the Polk County Jail.

Free Lunches for Youth at Ames Public Library This Summer in the Spirit of July 4

The Ames Public Library is ensuring that youth in the community have access to nutritious meals this summer by offering free lunches on weekdays. Starting today, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., all youth 18 years and younger can enjoy a free lunch in the Library's Auditorium.

Adults accompanying youth can also partake in the meal for a nominal fee of $3.50. This initiative aims to support the well-being of children and teens by providing them with a healthy meal to fuel their summer activities. Please note that baby formula is not available as part of this program.

Following the Fourth of July celebrations, this program continues the spirit of community and togetherness, offering families an opportunity to enjoy a meal in a welcoming space. Don’t miss out on this chance to ensure your children have a full stomach of good food throughout the summer.

Car Show 4th Of July Event from Nearby City

Celebrate Independence Day weekend with thousands of hot rod enthusiasts at the Goodguys 33rd Speedway Motors Heartland Nationals presented by BASF at the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines, from July 5-7. The event features over 5,000 vehicles including hot rods, trucks, customs, muscle cars, and classics. Enjoy the Classic Performance Products AutoCross series, swap meet, Cars 4 Sale Corral, vendor midway, live music, and top awards including the Builder’s Choice Awards. Ames High School alum Tamin Lipsey had the honor of throwing the first pitch at the Iowa Cubs game on Saturday. The event was a proud moment for the Ames community, showcasing Lipsey's continued connection to his hometown. The former student-athlete's appearance was met with cheers and applause, highlighting the strong spirit of #AmesHighPride and support from the Ames Community School District. Iowa State Secures Commitment from 3-Star Safety Joshua Patterson

Iowa State football has secured a commitment from 3-star safety Joshua Patterson for its 2025 recruiting class. Patterson, a 5-foot-11, 165-pound senior from Ed White High School in Jacksonville, Florida, is ranked as the No. 104 player in Florida and the No. 67 safety nationally. He chose Iowa State over offers from several other Division I programs, including Cincinnati, Indiana, and Maryland. Patterson, who comes from a football family, excelled both offensively and defensively in high school, recording significant stats on both sides of the ball. His commitment is the 13th for Iowa State's 2025 class and the second from a safety.
