Ames CSD Updates for the New School Year
New Superintendent: Scott Grimes starts as Ames CSD’s new superintendent on July 1, replacing Julious Lawson.
AMES Center Opening: The new AMES Center, located at the former Beloit Residential Treatment Center, will open in November, providing support for students with disabilities and a central food pantry.
Playground Upgrades: Inclusive playgrounds with sensory and wheelchair-accessible equipment are being added at Edwards, Meeker, and Northwood. Similar upgrades are planned for Sawyer, Mitchell, and Fellows next summer.
Associate Principal Changes: Anthony Jahr moves to Ames Middle School, Michelle Fuqua is assigned to Fellows Elementary, and Aaron Weddle joins as an associate principal at Ames Middle School.
New Cell Phone Policy: Students must place phones in designated "phone caddies" during class periods to boost engagement and mental health. Phones can be used before school, during passing periods, and at lunch.
Important Dates:
Sept. 3: Preschool classes begin.
Nov. 27-29: Thanksgiving break.
Dec. 23 - Jan. 3: Winter break, classes resume Jan. 6.
Jan. 14: Start of the second semester.
March 17-21: Spring break.
May 30: Last day of classes with early dismissal.

Iowa State University Welcome Weekend Highlights
Iowa State University students enjoy food while celebrating back in school during a cookout of the university's welcome weekend at Lied Athletic Recreation Center on Friday, Aug. 18, 2023, in Ames, Iowa.
Iowa State University's Cyclone Welcome Weekend, starting August 23, features a variety of free events for students.
On Friday, activities include a TRANSFERmation event for transfer students, academic success tips, an app-based scavenger hunt called Clone Quest, and a cookout at the Lied Recreation Center from 6 to 8 p.m. Evening festivities continue with Late Night at the Memorial Union.
Saturday’s events include the G.O.A.T. Breakfast with yoga and goats, a Gallery of Games, library services exploration at Ames Public Library, Bug Village with insect displays, Nerdology trivia, and a volleyball clash. The day wraps up with a performance by hypnotist and comedian Chris Jones at Stephens Auditorium.
Sunday introduces the Passport Adventure at Parks Library, where students can collect stamps from 2-5 p.m.

Cale Wallace Promoted to Associate Head Coach for Women’s Cross Country at Iowa State
Iowa State cross country assistant coach Cale Wallace has been elevated to associate head coach for women’s cross country. Director of track and field Jeremy Sudbury praised Wallace for his significant impact on the program's success through his recruiting and coaching. Wallace, who remains an assistant coach for track and field, helped the Cyclone women achieve a top-25 finish at the 2023 NCAA Championships and will work with a talented team moving forward. Wallace, with prior experience at Arkansas and North Dakota, is eager to continue his role in developing Iowa State’s cross country program. He and his wife, Logan, have a son, Pierce.
Jaylin Noel Awarded Jack Trice Endowed Scholarship
Iowa State wide receiver Jaylin Noel has been named this year's recipient of the Jack Trice Endowed Scholarship. Awarded annually to a senior football player who exemplifies courage, character, and leadership, Noel joins an esteemed group of scholars. Major in communications, Noel earned Academic All-Big 12 honors in 2022 and is a reliable receiver, with 66 catches for 820 yards and seven touchdowns in 2023. He values this scholarship as a testament to his dedication and the support from his university.
Ames School Orientation Day Bus Reminder
Attention Ames families: On Friday, August 23, transportation will be available to both Ames High School and Ames Middle School for their Orientation Day. If you've requested busing, it will be provided for your student that day. We’re looking forward to welcoming everyone!
