Ames CSD to Use $10,000 Grant for New Food Pantry

The Ames Community School District (CSD) plans to use a $10,000 grant from the Iowa Department of Education to stock a new food pantry at the Ames Multi-Purpose Educational Services (AMES) Center on Northwestern Avenue. The pantry, part of a broader effort to support students experiencing homelessness, will offer food, clothing, and school supplies.

This initiative aims to provide a welcoming and discreet space for students and families in need. The funding will cover essentials like food storage items and refrigerators. The pantry is expected to open in November.

ISU Local Food Festival

The Iowa State University Local Food Festival is an annual celebration of local food and healthy living. This event centers around incorporating local foods into your daily meals, empowering healthy lifestyles, and sustainability-focused activities to engage students, faculty and staff to make connections with Ames and nearby communities. The festival features educational displays, locally grown and produced products for sale by local vendors and ISU clubs, and recipe samples using fresh-picked produce from the ISU Horticulture Research Station.

Beth Wessel-Kroeschell Receives Carrie Chapman Catt Public Engagement Award

Congratulations to LAS alum, Beth Wessel-Kroeschell (political science), for being the recipient of the Carrie Chapman Catt Public Engagement Award.

Beth Wessel-Kroeschell, currently serving her 10th term in the Iowa House of Representatives, is the ranking member of the Health and Human Resources Committee and has played a key role in legislation supporting civil rights, reproductive freedom, and same-day voter registration. She is dedicated to improving Iowa's social and political landscape through her work in nonprofit leadership, community service, and advocacy for gender equality and public safety.

Kyle Konrardy Wins Pop-Tarts 'Crazy Good' Play of the Week

Iowa State kicker Kyle Konrardy's 54-yard game-winning field goal against Iowa earned him the Pop-Tarts "Crazy Good" Play of the Week, along with 54 boxes of Pop-Tarts. The Football Writers Association of America announced the award, celebrating Konrardy's last-minute kick that secured the Cyclones' 20-19 victory over their in-state rivals.

The Cyclones (2-0) play next on Sept. 21 against Arkansas State at Jack Trice Stadium, with kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m.

Hawkeyes struggle against San Jose State, bounce back with wins over Delaware and Cal Baptist

Iowa volleyball opened its home schedule with the Hawkeye Invitational, where they fell to San Jose State 3-1 but bounced back to defeat Delaware 3-2 and sweep Cal Baptist 3-0.

Against San Jose State, Iowa won just one set with standout performances from Michelle Urquhart (14 kills) and Joy Galles (18 digs). In their victory over Delaware, Hannah Whittingstall led with 11 kills, while the team rallied from a 2-1 deficit to win in five sets. The Hawkeyes then swept Cal Baptist with strong performances from Dominique Phills (10 kills) and Malu Garcia (match-winning ace).

Iowa now stands at 4-1 and will next face in-state rival Iowa State on Sept. 11 in Ames, with coverage on ESPN+.

Ames High Alumna Andie Newell Wins Emmy for FX's "Shōgun"

Andie Newell, on right, an Ames High School alumna, has won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Short Form Nonfiction or Reality Series for her work on "Shōgun - The Making of Shōgun" on FX. Newell, who served as a producer on all eight episodes of the series, received the award on Saturday, September 7. She was joined at the event by fellow team members Kenna McCabe, Melanie Pimentel, and Joel Kazuo Knoerns, celebrating their collective achievement in bringing the series to life.
