Ames Regional Economic Alliance Connects with Students at ISU Welcome Fest
Shannon Thiele and Elizabeth Ross from the Ames Regional Economic Alliance attended ISU Welcome Fest at the Iowa State University Memorial Union. They connected with students and promoted the new WorkinAmes.com job board and the "See Yourself in Ames" intern event series, set to return in summer 2025.
Ames Fire Department to Conduct Live Fire Training Today
The Ames Fire Department is conducting live fire training today, August 30, at a vacant house at 5501 E. Lincoln Way, beginning at 9 a.m. Training will start with small interior fires, progressing to a full burn of the house by mid-afternoon. Firefighters will remain on-site until the structure is reduced to smoldering materials, which may continue for several days.
Residents nearby may notice smoke or rusty water, but disruptions are expected to be minimal due to the location. Traffic on East Lincoln Way will stay open. Ames Fire Chief Rich Higgins highlighted the importance of such training for skill development and mentioned it is the second live fire drill this summer. The training follows state and national fire safety standards.

Iowa State’s Cael Brezina Named to Shaun Alexander Award Watch List
Iowa State freshman linebacker Cael Brezina has been named to the Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Award preseason watch list, highlighting 37 top freshmen nationwide. The Downers Grove, Illinois native is one of just three linebackers on the list. Brezina, a consensus three-star recruit, joined the Cyclones in the spring and was ranked the No. 15 recruit in Illinois by ESPN.
Iowa State Volleyball 2024 Season Opener at Rebel Challenge
Iowa State volleyball kicks off its 2024 season at the Rebel Challenge in Las Vegas, facing Pacific on August 30 and UNLV on August 31. Both matches will be live-streamed. The Cyclones, coming off two consecutive 20-win seasons under Head Coach Christy Johnson-Lynch, bring back 10 returners, including standout Nayeli Gonzalez, along with three freshmen and two transfers. This marks the first meeting against both Pacific and UNLV. The Cyclones’ home opener is the Cyclone Invite from September 5-7, followed by the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series against Iowa on September 11.

The Recipe: Cooking Classes in Downtown Ames
The Recipe offers hands-on cooking classes in Downtown Ames, from French macarons and egg rolls to pasta and knife skills. Owned by Patrick and Mindy Bergstrom, who also run Nook & Nest, Z.W. Mercantile, and Cooks’ Emporium, The Recipe builds on a long tradition of culinary education. Popular classes range from Pasta 101 to sushi and kids' snacks. The venue also hosts private events and offers a commercial kitchen for rent.
