💭TRIVIA CORNER

How Much Do You Know About Ames?

Question: What year was the Ames City Auditorium opened, and what type of events does it host?

(Answer at the bottom of the newsletter)

South Half of Roosevelt Avenue to Close on Tuesday

The south half of Roosevelt Avenue between 13th and 16th Streets will be closed for pavement removal and replacement starting Tuesday, Sept. 17, weather permitting. The closure is expected to last four to five weeks. A temporary lane closure on 13th Street adjacent to Roosevelt Avenue will also be in place for truck movement during the project but will reopen at the end of each day. The City of Ames has contracted with Manatts for the project, which includes updates to sidewalks for ADA compliance and replacement of sewer and water utilities.

Iowa State Leads Groundbreaking Livestock DNA Project

Iowa State University associate professor James Koltes holds a single nucleotide polymorphism chip. These glass microscope slides allow for testing thousands or even millions of single DNA bases in the genome for use in breeding or to identify genetic regions that impact traits important in agricultural species. Identifying regulatory regions will help refine the tests used on these chips to allow for precision breeding and new research to study how gene function is regulated across all genes in the genome. Iowa State University is embarking on a pioneering project to catalog genetic regulatory regions in livestock, supported by an $800,000 grant from the USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture. The initiative, led by Associate Professor James E. Koltes, aims to create a detailed encyclopedia of non-gene DNA regions that regulate traits such as body weight and feed efficiency.

Koltes, along with colleagues Chris Tuggle and Zhiliang Hu, will focus on cattle, pigs, and sheep. Their work could revolutionize animal breeding by uncovering crucial genetic variations that impact animal health and performance. The project will produce open-source annotation data and a dedicated online platform for sharing resources and training, marking a significant advancement in livestock genetics.

Iowa State University reports robust enrollment numbers this fall, with 30,432 students on campus, including 5,906 first-year students—a 16% increase over the past five years. The growth underscores the rising interest in ISU's STEM programs and innovative degrees.

ISU President Wendy Wintersteen highlights the university's appeal in offering leadership opportunities, undergraduate research, and hands-on experiences. First-year student Kaylee Cavanh from North Liberty praised the variety of classes, clubs, and financial aid that made ISU her top choice.

Ranked in the top 10% nationally for affordability and educational quality by Money.com, Iowa State supports 72% of undergraduates and 77% of first-year students through scholarships and grants. This fall, the student body includes individuals from all 99 Iowa counties, all 50 states, and 116 countries. The incoming class features nearly 21% first-generation students and 23% Pell grant recipients, with an average high school GPA of 3.75 and an ACT score just under 25.
