Ames Hires First Full-Time Sustainability Coordinator

The City of Ames has appointed Nolan Sagan as its first full-time sustainability coordinator. Sagan will guide city departments to meet the goals outlined in Ames' Climate Action Plan, which aims for a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

Responsibilities and Goals

Sagan will support departments in aligning with sustainability objectives, oversee grant applications, and promote community initiatives for greenhouse gas reduction. His appointment marks a shift from a part-time shared role with Iowa State University to a dedicated position for the city.

Background

Sagan has a strong environmental background, with a bachelor’s in environmental science from the University of Northern Iowa and a master’s in environmental geology from the University of Kansas. He previously spearheaded sustainability efforts at Spire Energy.

This move reflects Ames' commitment to environmental sustainability and effective resource management.
