ISU Alum and V Foundation CEO to Discuss Cancer Research Investments

Shane Jacobson, CEO of the V Foundation for Cancer Research and Iowa State alum, will speak on advancements in cancer research funding on Oct. 30 at 6 p.m. in ISU's Memorial Union. His talk, titled “Journey to the Future,” will explore his path in nonprofit leadership and the foundation's role in pioneering cancer cures. Jacobson's impactful work includes major funding initiatives, partnerships, and collaborations with ESPN and Disney. The event is free, open to the public, and will be recorded for ISU students and staff.

New Cafe "The Dot" Opens in West Ames

The Dot, a new cafe on Dotson Drive in west Ames, has opened with a focus on locally-sourced coffee, breakfast, and lunch. Owned by Dawn Budd, the cafe offers seasonal menu items, including options from Morning Bell Coffee Roasters, Little Woods Herbal Teas, and Renn's Syrups. With diverse offerings for various dietary needs, The Dot also provides a cozy atmosphere for students, offering grab-and-go items and space for studying or small events. Open Wednesday through Sunday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., The Dot invites everyone to explore its unique menu.

ISU College of Design to Award Theaster Gates, Jr. with 2024 Christian Petersen Design Award

Renowned artist Theaster Gates, Jr., an ISU alum, will receive the 2024 Christian Petersen Design Award from the College of Design. Gates will be honored at the ISU Alumni Association’s Honors and Awards Ceremony on Nov. 1. Known for his work in urban development and preservation of Black cultural spaces, Gates’ innovative installations have gained international acclaim, including exhibits in Tokyo, London, and Washington, D.C. Gates is a professor at the University of Chicago and the founder of the Rebuild Foundation.

Ames History Museum Reopens with Expanded Space and Exhibits

The Ames History Museum has reopened after a $4.5 million expansion, featuring new interactive exhibits and community spaces five times its original size. Located at 416 Douglas Ave., the museum includes historical artifacts, a research room, and rotating displays. A highlight is the Dinkey Train replica, reflecting Ames’ transportation history. The updated facility also offers rentable rooms with scenic views of Main Street. Ames-inspired merchandise by local artists is available, making the museum an engaging new destination for Ames residents and visitors.

Exploring Ireland Ahead of the 2025 Aer Lingus Classic

Members of Iowa State's Athletics Department spent three days in Ireland over the summer to prepare for next season's Aer Lingus Football Classic. This is the final part of a three-part series on activities around Dublin beyond the 2025 Aer Lingus Classic game against Kansas State, scheduled for Aug. 23, 2025.

Cyclones Announce 2025 Gymnastics Schedule

Iowa State Gymnastics has revealed its 2025 schedule, featuring five home meets. The Cyclones open Jan. 3 at LSU and will host Iowa and Brown on Jan. 10 for their first home event. Big 12 play begins Jan. 17 at Utah, with other key meets at Arizona, BYU, and the Nebraska quad.

Iowa State closes the season with the Big 12 Championship on Mar. 22, followed by NCAA Regionals on Apr. 2.

Cyclones and Bears Draw in Regular Season Finale

Iowa State’s soccer team concluded its season with a 1-1 draw against Baylor Friday at the Cyclone Soccer Complex. The Cyclones struck early, with Lauren Hernandez scoring in the fifth minute, marking ISU’s quickest goal this season. Baylor leveled the score late, with Skye Leach finding the net in the 85th minute, securing Baylor's spot in the Big 12 Championship.

Iowa State (3-9-6, 1-5-4 Big 12) outshot Baylor 9-7 in the first half, though the Bears finished with a slight 17-16 shot advantage. ISU goalkeeper Avery Gillahan made six saves, bringing her season total to 96.

Cyclones Fall to Nebraska in First Loss of the Season

Iowa State swim and dive faced a tough challenge against Nebraska, falling 202-94 in Lincoln and moving to a 2-1 record. Despite a solid effort, the Cyclones couldn’t disrupt Nebraska's stronghold, marking their tenth consecutive loss to the Cornhuskers since 2003.

Top performances came from Carley Caughron, who scored 12 points, placing second in three individual events and the 400 relay. Emma Kuhn won the 100 back with a 56.77 finish, adding nine points for ISU, while Winter Craig placed in the 100 and 200 fly. Iowa State will aim to rebound at the Hawkeye Invitational, Nov. 21-23.
