Ames History Museum Set to Reopen After Expansion

The expanded Ames History Museum will celebrate its grand reopening from noon to 8 p.m. on October 26 at 416 Douglas Ave. After years of fundraising and construction, the museum has incorporated the adjacent Ames Pantorium, purchased in August 2021.

The reopening event will feature classic cars, behind-the-scenes tours, family activities, and refreshments. Douglas Avenue will be closed for the festivities. The museum will be open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. following the grand opening.

New exhibits include a permanent display titled "Ames: From Prairie to Present" and a rotating exhibit called "Quilted Together." The museum's collections vault now consolidates all artifacts in one location, with a viewing window for visitors to observe ongoing work.

The expansion project cost approximately $4.5 million, and about $3.8 million has been raised. The museum still seeks donations to cover the remaining $700,000 to ensure a debt-free operation. Community support has been instrumental in making this project a reality.
