On Monday, Nov. 11, the City of Ames hosted a Veterans Day ceremony at City Hall Auditorium, gathering veterans, families, and residents to honor local service members. Keynote speaker Staff Sgt. Madison Lihs from the Iowa National Guard shared insights from her military service. The event included performances by the Heart of Iowa Senior Band and the Ames High School Concert Chorale, with local leaders such as Mayor John Haila and Post Commander Cliff Barker addressing the audience. The ceremony recognized veterans’ sacrifices, uniting the community in a tribute of gratitude.

Despite Veterans Day being a federal holiday, Iowa State University continues regular classes, a decision some students question. Freshman students Izzie Livingston, Haley Auen, and Gabby Lauwagie expressed that it would be respectful to take the day off to honor veterans. Suggestions included adding an on-campus event or observance to acknowledge the contributions of veterans. Iowa State’s Memorial Union will hold a Gold Star Hall Ceremony to remember ISU veterans who lost their lives in service.

A 10-acre solar farm near Iowa State University’s campus has opened as part of a collaboration between ISU researchers and Alliant Energy, focusing on “agrivoltaics.” This innovative model combines crop production and solar energy, studying crops like broccoli and strawberries planted under solar panels. With backing from the U.S. Department of Energy, this project assesses the environmental, technical, and economic benefits of this approach for Iowa’s agriculture. Local partners and Iowa specialty crop groups also support the venture to foster sustainable farming practices.

Milan Momcilovic and Dishon Jackson also made big contributions, adding 16 and 13 points, respectively. Jones, who also grabbed five rebounds and dished five assists, led the Cyclones in extending their winning streak to 20 straight at Hilton Coliseum.
After a slow start, ISU took control late in the first half, embarking on a 13-2 run to take a 34-22 halftime lead. Iowa State widened the gap in the second half with a 13-0 run, highlighted by Jones’ scoring burst, including two consecutive 3-pointers. ISU’s defense forced 16 turnovers and held the Roos to under 36% shooting. The Cyclones look to maintain momentum in their next matchup against IU Indianapolis on Monday.
