Ames Lab Secures $15.1 Million for Plastics Upcycling Research

The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Science has renewed funding of $15.1 million for the Institute for Cooperative Upcycling of Plastics (iCOUP) at Ames National Laboratory. Over the next four years, this funding will support research in using discarded plastics as raw materials for new products and chemicals. Led by Ames Lab, iCOUP is a collaboration among top scientists from multiple institutions, focusing on advanced methods for recycling and upcycling plastics like polyolefins, developing innovative catalysts, and creating sustainable manufacturing practices.

The center's work includes developing new recycling techniques that maintain the quality of recycled materials, designing catalysts for specific chemical transformations, and employing advanced spectroscopic and modeling methods to improve upcycling processes.

iCOUP will continue to explore new scientific concepts for polymer upcycling, aiming to advance sustainable manufacturing solutions.

Student Designers Launch New Cyclone Clothing Line

Iowa State fans will have fresh options to show their Cyclone pride this fall, thanks to the "Cyclones Take New York" design competition. Organized by Iowa State’s fashion program and Innovate 1858, the contest invited students to design unique Cyclone apparel beyond traditional sportswear.

The winning designs, which range from vintage-inspired hoodies to athleisure wear, will hit the shelves of Innovate 1858 on September 3. The top two student designers, Elli Allen and Kai Huntoon, will also attend New York Fashion Week. A launch event for the collection is set for September 5 at the Student Innovation Center's EXCITE! open house.

The collection was developed in collaboration with Iowa State Trademark Licensing, the College of Human Sciences, and ISU Athletics.

Konrardy Earns Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week

Iowa State kicker Kyle Konrardy was named Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week after his clutch performance in the Cyclones' 20-19 comeback win at No. 21 Iowa. The redshirt freshman made two key fourth-quarter field goals, including a game-winning 54-yarder with six seconds left, securing Iowa State’s second straight win at Kinnick Stadium.

After trailing 13-0 at halftime and 19-7 late in the third quarter, Konrardy's 46-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter and his 54-yard game-winner were pivotal. His 54-yard kick tied for the longest by a Cyclone against Iowa. Iowa State is on a bye this weekend and returns to play Arkansas State on Sept. 21.
