Ames Woman Raises Money for a Sweet Cause

Grace McCunn, an Ames native, has turned her childhood health struggles into a mission to give back. Diagnosed with chronic migraines, Grace spent significant time at Blank Children’s Hospital in Des Moines. To show her gratitude, she started a lemonade stand that has since evolved into an annual 5k event.

This year, the event at Ada Hayden Park attracted over 100 participants and raised $30,000. The proceeds will benefit the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Blank Children’s Hospital and the Ronald McDonald House. Over eight years, Grace has raised more than $170,000.

Grace’s former teacher, Lauren Booten, and Blank Children’s Hospital senior development director, Janet Fisher, commend her efforts and the impact she’s made. Donations can still be made via Venmo @Grace-McCunn.

ISU Study Explains Why Dairy Cows Are Prime Targets for Flu

A recent study by Iowa State University's College of Veterinary Medicine has revealed that dairy cows are particularly susceptible to highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) due to the presence of sialic acid, a sugar molecule that acts as a receptor for the flu virus, in their mammary glands.

Researchers found that these receptors allow the virus to attach and infect the cows, which raises concerns about the transmission of the virus through milking machines and the consumption of raw milk. The study emphasizes the importance of pasteurization, which neutralizes the virus in commercially sold milk.

The study, published in the July edition of Emerging Infectious Diseases, underscores the need for further research on influenza receptors in dairy cattle and other species to develop better preventive measures.

2025 PG Reese Beaty Commits to Iowa State Women's Basketball

Reese Beaty, a standout point guard from York Institute in Jamestown, Tennessee, has committed to Iowa State women's basketball for the class of 2025. Beaty, who initially committed to Clemson before reopening her recruitment, chose Iowa State over Penn State, Mississippi State, and Michigan.

During her summer visit to Ames, Beaty noticed the similarities between her playing style and that of current Cyclone point guard Emily Ryan. "It’s scary how similar we played," Beaty said. Impressed by the team's close-knit atmosphere and the program's fit, Beaty decided Iowa State was the perfect choice.

Her commitment comes at a crucial time, as the Cyclones will need a replacement for Ryan, one of the most decorated point guards in school history, after the 2024-25 season. Beaty aims to fill those shoes and continue the legacy.
