Ames Man Charged After Cat Dies in Hot Car
An Ames man, Christian Michael Hansen, has been charged with animal neglect after police discovered his cat dead inside a vehicle on Scott Avenue. Responding officers found the cat inside a locked car with temperatures reaching 105 degrees. According to police, Hansen admitted to leaving the cat without food or water for two days, and the animal was believed to have been dead inside the vehicle for about a week before being discovered. Hansen is currently held in the Story County Jail with a bond set at $1,000, and his preliminary hearing is scheduled for October 8.

Story County Water & Land Legacy Bond on November Ballot
In the upcoming November election, Story County residents will have the chance to vote on the $25 million Story County Water and Land Legacy Bond. If approved, the bond will fund conservation and recreational projects across the county. Key areas of focus include improving water quality, enhancing natural habitats, strengthening river and stream buffers, and upgrading parks and trails. The bond aims to ensure long-term environmental health and provide outdoor recreation opportunities and educational resources for the community.
Sweep the Streets Project Cleans Up After Game Days

Iowa State students in the Leadership and Learning Sciences (LLS) minor have launched the "Sweep the Streets" project to clean up the streets after game days. The initiative, led by seniors Mackenzy Ruff and Gabby Mowbray, aims to reduce trash-related pollution and foster a sense of community among students.
The project, developed in their LLS class, encourages all ISU students to participate. Two cleanup events are scheduled for Oct. 20 and Nov. 17, with participants meeting at the Gerdin Business Building's east parking lot at 2 p.m.
The students hope to create lasting change and inspire future students to continue the project.

Iowa State Lands 2027 Commit Josiah Harrington
Iowa State men’s basketball secured its first 2027 commit, as 6-foot-4 guard Josiah Harrington from North Scott made his decision ahead of his sophomore season. Harrington cited staying close to home and the strong relationships he built with the coaching staff as key factors in his choice.
Harrington, who averaged 13.3 points per game and shot 46.5% from beyond the arc as a freshman, chose the Cyclones over offers from Illinois, Iowa, Oklahoma, and Northern Illinois.
Jayden Higgins Named Cyclone Club Athlete of the Week
Jayden Higgins earned Cyclone Club Athlete of the Week honors after leading Iowa State to a 20-0 win over Houston. The senior wide receiver set a school record with a touchdown reception in six consecutive games, currently the nation's longest active streak. Higgins finished with eight catches for 79 yards.
No. 16 Iowa State faces Baylor on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. on FOX.

Lindsay Wede Named Art Educator of the Year
Lindsay Wede, an Ames High School art teacher, has been named Art Educator of the Year by the Art Educators of Iowa. In her 19th year of teaching, Wede has dedicated 11 years to inspiring students at Ames High. She leads the AHS Art Club and National Art Honor Society, connecting students with creative projects like creating portraits for patients at the Hospice House. This honor reflects her commitment to fostering creativity and making a positive impact on her community.
