West Nile Virus Detected in Central Iowa Mosquitoes: Key Information

Recent testing by Iowa State University (ISU) and the State Hygienic Lab has confirmed that mosquitoes from traps at Emma McCarthy Lee Park, 3400 Ross Rd., Ames, have tested positive for West Nile virus (WNV). This indicates the potential presence of WNV-carrying mosquitoes in the community.

Dr. Ryan C. Smith from ISU's Department of Plant Pathology, Entomology, and Microbiology noted that positive WNV tests are common during this time of year. The findings enable the implementation of preventative measures like spraying, larvicide, and removal of standing water. Residents are reminded to take precautions outdoors.

To reduce mosquito populations, it is essential to eliminate standing water from areas such as flower pots and buckets. Protective measures include using mosquito repellent and wearing long-sleeved clothing, especially during peak mosquito activity at dusk and dawn.

The Centers for Disease Control reports that most people infected with WNV show no symptoms, while about one in five develop flu-like symptoms. Severe illness occurs in approximately one in 150 cases.

The Ames Parks and Recreation Department employs a comprehensive mosquito control program, including surveillance, larviciding, and fogging. Weekly fogging at Emma McCarthy Lee Park has been ongoing since late June and will increase in response to positive WNV test results. Fogging is scheduled for Wednesdays from 8 to 10:30 p.m., weather permitting, with alternative times set for weekday mornings.

Iowa State Student Arrested for Selling Illegal Drugs

Diego Ramirez, a 21-year-old Iowa State University student, was arrested Thursday following a months-long investigation into illegal drug sales. Ramirez was identified after the arrest of another individual for child exploitation, which led police to messages detailing drug purchases.

An undercover officer later purchased psilocybin mushrooms from Ramirez in May. He now faces multiple charges, including possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver and delivery of a Schedule I substance. While Ramirez is linked to the drug investigation, he is not a suspect in the related child pornography case.

Ramirez was booked into the Story County Jail.

Iowa's Women's Sports Drive Revenue Boost, ISU Sees Ticket Sales Increase

The University of Iowa (UI) projects over $150 million in revenue for fiscal year 2025, driven by increased ticket sales in football and women's sports, including basketball and wrestling. The popularity of women's sports and renegotiated Big Ten TV contracts contribute to this growth.

Iowa State University (ISU) anticipates $114.2 million in revenue, with significant increases in ticket sales for women's basketball, wrestling, and football due to an additional home game. However, changes in conference alignments and the expanded College Football Playoff will affect ISU's revenue distribution, leading to operational adjustments.

The University of Northern Iowa (UNI) expects a slight decrease in athletics revenue to $14.7 million, impacted by reduced marketing revenue and lack of guaranteed game revenue for men's basketball.
