Ames Nonprofit Fights Puppy Mills and Feeds Local Pets

Alexis Bell, a volunteer and non-profit research research analyst, organizes food at the Ames Pet Food Pantry on University Avenue on Friday, June 7, 2024, in Ames, Iowa.

Story County's original pet food pantry, operated by Bailing Out Benji, is making a significant impact by feeding nearly 6,000 animals annually and campaigning to end puppy mills. Located at 2521 University Blvd. Suite 123, the Ames Pet Food Pantry distributes dog and cat food three days a week, serving around 500 pets monthly.

Executive director Mindi Callison emphasizes the pantry's "no questions asked" policy, aiming to reduce barriers for those seeking help. The pantry also provides spaying, neutering, microchipping, and vaccinations.

Bailing Out Benji began offering pet food in 2017 and has since expanded its operations. Despite limited funding, the nonprofit continues to meet growing demand, with a particular need for dry dog and cat food. The pantry partners with the Ames Jaycees for events like the benefit concert on June 21 at Bandshell Park, encouraging donations to support their cause.

United Way of Story County Community Impact Director Anneke Mundel highlights the healing power of pets, as visitors from nearby mental health and disability services often find comfort in spending time with the pantry's dogs.

The national contest winners receive significant scholarships and technology packages for their schools, highlighting the competition's importance in fostering young artistic talent.

Iowa Farmland Cash Rental Rates Remains Unchanged, Says Ames-Based Survey

Even with a substantial reduction in cash rent many farmers will be projected to have negative returns. IFT file photo

The latest survey from Iowa State University Extension and Outreach reveals that cash rent for Iowa farm ground remains mostly unchanged from 2023. The average rent for corn and soybeans is $279 per acre, marking the first time in five years that rates have not increased.

Alejandro Plastina, an associate professor in economics at Iowa State, attributes this stability to tight profit margins for farmers. "From December 2022 to December 2023, the rate of return for farmers has declined from about 10% to 2%," Plastina noted. Without an increase in commodity prices, he expects rents to remain steady or decrease.

The survey also includes rent rates for hay, pastureland, and oat production. Established alfalfa averages $200 per acre, grass hay $145, and oats $198. Pastureland ranges from $95 per acre for highly productive areas to $60 for lower productivity.

Regionally, six out of nine districts saw an increase in rents. The highest values were reported in northwest ($304) and northeast ($309) Iowa, while the lowest were in the south-central district at $231 per acre.
