The event aimed to foster police-community partnerships and featured fun activities, including vehicle tours and a Blackhawk helicopter landing.
Police Chief Geoff Huff emphasized the importance of community collaboration for safety. Ames Joins Other Iowa Schools in Banning Cellphones in Classrooms
In an effort to enhance student focus and support mental health, the Ames Community School District has announced a new policy banning cellphones in classrooms. This decision aligns Ames with other schools across Iowa implementing similar measures.
According to a letter sent to parents, students will now be required to place their phones in a designated area before classes begin. They will still have access to their phones before school, during lunch periods, and between classes.
The district believes that reducing cellphone use during instructional time will foster a more attentive and engaged learning environment while also addressing concerns related to teenage mental health.

Iowa State Football Newcomers Tackle 2024 Playbook
Iowa State wide receiver Matthew Bess is among the Cyclone newcomers tasked with mastering the Iowa State playbook.
Iowa State football newcomers have been working hard to master the complex playbook ahead of the 2024 season. Freshmen like Beni Ngoyi, Matt Bess, and transfer Eli Green have employed various strategies to learn the intricate system. Bess, transitioning from Blinn Junior College, faced one of the toughest adjustments, while Ngoyi and his peers quizzed each other to grasp their roles. Green, familiar with a similar offense at North Dakota State, had to adapt to new terminology.
Understanding the playbook is crucial for the Cyclones, ensuring they play instinctively without hesitation. As players like Myles Purchase, Darien Porter, and Jontez Williams, who have had years to learn the system, vie for starting positions, the focus remains on turning playbook knowledge into on-field success. This preparation is key to meeting high expectations for the upcoming season.
ISU Softball Earns NFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete Honors
Iowa State University (ISU) has once again achieved a significant academic milestone, with 14 Cyclone softball players earning spots on the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-America Scholar-Athlete team for the 2023-24 academic year.
To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a GPA of 3.5 or higher. This year’s honorees from the Cyclones include Angelina Allen, McKenna Andrews, Ireland Buss, Kali Gose, Maddie Knowles, Sophie Maras, Camille Marin, Paige Nakashima, Isabelle Nosan, Alesia Ranches, Lauren Schurman, Carli Spelhaug, Olivia Wardlow, and Paige Zender. Allen, Andrews, and Maras received this accolade for the second consecutive year, while Spelhaug and Wardlow were recognized for the third year.
Additionally, Illinois transfer Sydney Malott joined the ranks of All-America Scholar Athletes. Over 8,000 collegiate softball players across various divisions achieved this honor.
ISU Transfer WR Eli Green Bets on Himself, Aims to Shine in Loaded Room
Eli Green has bet on himself twice, first by walking on at North Dakota State and then by transferring to Iowa State to reunite with his former position coach, Noah Pauley. The 5-10, 185-pound junior from Farmington, Minn., brings elite route-running skills to an already deep receiving corps at ISU.
Green, who totaled 1,005 all-purpose yards and scored three touchdowns last season, is excited to continue growing under Pauley’s guidance. He averaged 19.3 yards per catch at NDSU and aims to contribute significantly in the slot and downfield for the Cyclones.
Despite the fierce competition, with top receivers Jayden Higgins and Jaylin Noel returning, Green is confident and ready to make an impact. “This is exactly where I want to be,” Green said, appreciating the support and camaraderie at ISU. The Cyclones’ receiving room, including talents like Beni Ngoyi and Isaiah Alston, promises a dynamic passing game for the upcoming season.
