ISU Researcher Awarded Grant for Crop Resiliency Study
Iowa State's Michelle Guo has received a $1.8 million grant from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences to advance her research on Feronia, a plant gene that aids growth and resilience under stress. Guo, an assistant professor in genetics, has been exploring this gene's roles for nearly two decades, aiming to enhance plant hardiness against climate challenges. Her findings may pave the way for stronger, high-yield crops, contributing to global food security and supporting the work of early-career scientists.
Ames Schools Add In-School Therapy Through Year-End
The Ames Community School District will offer in-school therapy for students, collaborating with Heart and Solutions and Woodward Community Based Solutions to provide support across district schools through this academic year. Ryan Crane, Executive Director of NAMI Iowa, emphasized the importance of mental health access in schools and having trusted adults for students to confide in. Crane highlighted that behavioral changes, like withdrawing from activities or altered eating and sleeping patterns, can be warning signs of mental health challenges.
The Keystones Rock the M-Shop with Indie Flair
The Keystones, an indie rock band from Milwaukee, brought electric energy to Ames, performing at Iowa State’s Memorial Union Maintenance Shop on Friday night. Joined by King Wylde’s emotional love songs and Jordan Mayland’s unique mix of acoustic and synth tunes, the night featured powerful rock anthems that got the crowd moving. Known for their modern rock influences like Queens of the Stone Age and Arctic Monkeys, The Keystones played crowd-pleasers and tracks from their current EP tour, making it a memorable night for Ames music fans.

It’s been 58 years since the Peanuts holiday special It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown first aired on CBS. Debuting on October 27, 1966, the animated classic quickly became a holiday favorite, delighting generations with its charming characters and timeless Halloween story. Happy Anniversary, Great Pumpkin!
Candidates for Iowa’s 4th Congressional District
Ryan Melton (D) (pictured left) and Randy Feenstra (R) (pictured right).
Iowa voters in the 4th Congressional District will decide between Republican incumbent Congressman Randy Feenstra and Democratic challenger Ryan Melton.
Feenstra, a Hull native, has represented the district since 2021 and previously held positions in both Sioux County and the Iowa State Senate. Melton, an Iowa State alum based in Ames, brings experience in history, political science, and a 15-year career with Nationwide Insurance.
Remember to cast your vote in the general election on November 5.
Ames Police Make Arrest After Gun Threats on Campus Avenue
Ames Police arrested Donovan Prusia, 21, on Monday following an incident on Friday night where he allegedly brandished a handgun and threatened multiple people at an apartment on Campus Avenue. Prusia reportedly ignored police commands, picking up the weapon as officers approached, but eventually surrendered. Charges include harassment, intimidation with a dangerous weapon, and assault. Tamin Lipsey Named to Bob Cousy Award Watch List
Iowa State’s junior point guard Tamin Lipsey has been named to the Bob Cousy Award Preseason Watch List, recognizing him as one of the top 20 point guards in Division I men's basketball. Lipsey, a standout defensive player and AP Honorable Mention All-American, was a finalist for multiple national awards last season, including the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year.
Lipsey, known for his balanced play and academic achievements, averaged 12.4 points, 4.9 assists, 4.6 rebounds, and 2.7 steals in his sophomore season, a feat achieved by just 17 players nationally since 1996-97. Fan voting for the award will begin on November 1, with the finalists to be narrowed down in early 2025.
Emily Ryan Named to Nancy Lieberman Award Watchlist
Iowa State senior point guard Emily Ryan has been named to the Nancy Lieberman Award watchlist for the third time in her career, highlighting her as one of the nation’s top point guards. Returning for her fifth season, Ryan has excelled with a record-breaking career at Iowa State, including setting the school record for career assists (782) and holding the Big 12 Tournament record for assists (64).
Cyclone Club Athlete of the Week: Kate Mitchell
Iowa State's Kate Mitchell has been named the Cyclone Club Athlete of the Week after placing third in 1-meter diving with a score of 265.88 at the NCAA Zone Diving cuts in Nebraska. This season, she has won the 1-meter event twice and qualified for NCAA Zone Diving for the second straight year. The Cyclones will compete again on Nov. 21 at the Hawkeye Invite in Iowa City.
