Ames Tops the Chart for Highest Employment in the U.S.

Ames, IA, leads the nation with the highest employment rates according to the latest data from the Labor Department. As of April 2024, the unemployment rate in the Ames Metropolitan Statistical Area stands at an impressively low 1.6%. This figure places Ames at the top of the list for U.S. cities with the highest employment rates.

The largest employer in Ames is Iowa State University, which significantly contributes to the city's robust job market. Additionally, the agriculture and energy sectors play crucial roles in sustaining employment levels in the area.

Story County, where Ames is located, is currently awaiting the passage of a historic bill in the Iowa legislature. This bill, which aims to restrict foreign ownership of land, could potentially drive further economic growth in the region.

Lincoln Way and South Duff Avenue Intersection to Close Overnight in Ames

Starting yesterday, Tuesday, the intersection of U.S. 69/Lincoln Way and South Duff Avenue in Ames remains closed for nighttime construction work. The closure will be in effect from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. on weeknights through Wednesday, August 7.

During the closure, crews will perform milling and hot-mix asphalt paving. Motorists are advised to follow a marked detour via East 2nd Street, Des Moines Avenue, East Lincoln Way, Sumner Avenue, SE 2nd Street, South 2nd Street, and South Sherman Avenue.

The Iowa Department of Transportation urges drivers to proceed with caution and adhere to posted speed limits in the work zone. Traffic fines for moving violations double in work zones.

This same intersection was previously closed for a week in November 2023 for manhole repairs, water main installation, and sanitary sewer work.

Cooper, Freyler on Nagurski Trophy Watch List

Iowa State safeties Jeremiah Cooper and Beau Freyler have been named to the 2024 Bronko Nagurski Trophy Watch List, recognizing the nation's top defensive player. They are the only safety teammates on the list, which features 75 defensive players from 56 schools.

Cooper, a junior from El Paso, Texas, earned preseason All-Big 12 honors after a standout 2023 season with five interceptions and 45 tackles. Freyler, from Colorado Springs, Colorado, enters his senior year following an impressive junior season with 107 tackles and three interceptions.

Tickets for the 2024 football season are now on sale, including season tickets starting at $299, mini-packs, single-game tickets, and parking. The Cyclones open their season on August 31 against North Dakota.

Men's and women's basketball at the 2024 Olympics is underway, and former Iowa State players are making a significant impact.

Bridget Carleton (Canada):

  • Despite Canada's 75-54 loss to France, Carleton excelled with eight points, eight rebounds, two steals, and two blocks in a team-high 36 minutes.

  • Canada plays next on Thursday, August 1, against Australia.

Marial Shayok (South Sudan):

  • Shayok was key in South Sudan's 90-79 win over Puerto Rico, scoring 15 points and grabbing three rebounds in 23 minutes.

  • South Sudan faces Team USA on Wednesday and Serbia on Saturday, August 3.

Nick Weiler-Babb (Germany):

  • Contributed five points and two steals in Germany's 97-77 victory over Japan.

  • Germany's upcoming games are against Brazil on Tuesday and France on Friday.

George Conditt IV (Puerto Rico):

  • Perfect 6-for-6 shooting for 13 points and six rebounds in Puerto Rico's loss to South Sudan.

  • Puerto Rico's next games are against Serbia on Wednesday and Team USA on Saturday.
