The Ames Parks and Recreation Department has received an $810,500 grant from the U.S. Forest Service for urban forestry projects over the next five years. The grant, approved by the Ames City Council on June 25, will support efforts to combat the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB), diversify urban trees, and manage wooded areas. Projects will include tree trimming, invasive vegetation control, and creating a gravel bed nursery. The Arbor Day Foundation will assist with grant management. The funds will help expedite the removal of ash trees, improve park woodlands, and update the tree inventory. New Understanding of Plant Enzyme Could Enhance Crop Management
Visual representations of the chitinase surface and secondary structures.
Researchers at the U.S. Department of Energy Ames National Laboratory have made new discoveries about chitinases, enzymes in corn and rice that help combat fungal infections. These findings could enable farmers to address fungal attacks more efficiently and improve crop health monitoring. Chitinases play a crucial role in protecting plants, particularly in the rhizosphere, where intense microbial activity occurs. The study found that specific chitinases can kill fungi like Aspergillus niger, which causes black mold. Additionally, the research explored the use of aptamers to detect these enzymes early, potentially allowing for timely intervention and more targeted treatments. This could benefit traditional agricultural crops and biomass used for alternative energy sources.
