Ames Receives Over $800K from U.S. Forest Service for Emerald Ash Borer Fight

The City of Ames has secured an $810,500 grant from the U.S. Forest Service to enhance its urban forestry efforts over the next five years. The funds will be used to plant new trees, remove Emerald Ash Borer-infected ash trees, trim trees, control invasive vegetation, and establish a gravel bed nursery for young trees.

City Forester Gabriele Edwards expressed gratitude for the grant, noting its significant impact on the community and urban forest. The grant supports Ames' Emerald Ash Borer Response Plan, which includes phased treatment and removal of infected trees and a one-to-one replacement program to diversify the urban forest.

The Ames community is mourning the loss of Erwin “Erv” Klaas, a revered conservationist and former ISU professor, who passed away on July 6, 2024, at the age of 88. Klaas, a professor emeritus of animal ecology at Iowa State University, was instrumental in founding Friends of Ada Hayden Heritage Park and served as the organization's president from 2010 to 2018. He was also a board member of the conservation nonprofit Prairie Rivers of Iowa.

Klaas played a pivotal role in the establishment of Ada Hayden Heritage Park, conducting vegetation surveys and advocating for its creation on the former industrial gravel mining site. His efforts led to the park being named after ISU professor and conservationist Ada Hayden.

Klaas was known for his deep passion for nature and his significant contributions to conservation, including his work to outlaw DDT in the 1970s. He received numerous accolades throughout his career, including the Story County Citizen of the Year award in 2017 and the Hagie Award for service to conservation in 2008.

Jim Pease, president of Friends of Ada Hayden Heritage Park, and Dan Haug from Prairie Rivers of Iowa, remembered Klaas as a dedicated and kind-hearted individual who inspired many with his knowledge and enthusiasm for the environment.
