Ames Unveils $21M Surgery Center to Enhance Patient Care
Ames’ newly constructed $21 million Surgery Center, a partnership between Mary Greeley Medical Center and McFarland Clinic, is set to improve access to outpatient procedures in central Iowa. Located at 2120 Bailey Avenue, the state-of-the-art 31,000-square-foot facility features six operating rooms, four endoscopy rooms, and 33 private recovery rooms.
The center specializes in outpatient surgeries across multiple fields, including orthopedics, gynecology, urology, and ENT. Officials highlight benefits like lower costs, greater efficiency, and improved patient convenience. Open for limited cases since September, the center aims to be fully operational in early 2025 following Medicare certification. Public tours are available this Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Ames to Celebrate MLK Day with Keynote and Community Honors
The City of Ames and the Ames/Story County MLK Celebration Committee will host a hybrid celebration honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday, Jan. 20, at 6:30 p.m. at the Ames City Auditorium, 520 Sixth St. The event will also stream live on Facebook and YouTube.
Dr. Toyia K. Younger, Senior Vice President for Student Affairs at Iowa State University, will deliver the keynote address. The program will include the announcement of the MLK Essay Contest winners and the presentation of the Ames Humanitarian Award. Cyclone Track Stars Shine at Sharon Colyear-Danville Invite
Iowa State's track distance athletes kicked off the indoor season with record-breaking performances at the Sharon Colyear-Danville Invite in Boston.
Women’s 3,000m: Junior Maelle Porcher set a personal record of 9:01.17, becoming the third fastest in Iowa State history. She ranked 11th among collegiate athletes and 16th overall.
Men’s 3,000m: Seniors Devan Kipyego (7:49.62) and Silas Winders (7:49.81) posted the fourth and fifth fastest times in school history, finishing seventh and eighth.
Men’s 5,000m: Seniors Sanele Masondo (13:20.30) and Said Mechaal (13:21.13) claimed the second and third spots in Cyclone history, with freshman Joash Ruto adding the eighth-fastest time (13:40.73).
Next up, the Cyclones host three consecutive meets at Lied Recreation Center, starting with the ISU Holiday Invite on December 13-14.
Cyclones Fall Short in Big 12 Championship Against Sun Devils
No. 16 Iowa State suffered a 45-19 defeat to No. 15 Arizona State in the Big 12 Championship. Costly turnovers, including three in the third quarter, sealed the Cyclones' fate.
Quarterback Rocco Becht started strong but finished with 214 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception. Carson Hansen led the rush with 52 yards, while Jayden Higgins topped receiving with 115 yards. Despite a resilient effort, Iowa State couldn’t recover after falling behind by 21 points early in the second half.
Head coach Matt Campbell praised the team's perseverance, saying, “I couldn’t be prouder of these kids...but mistakes against a team of this caliber are paralyzing.”
Iowa State now looks ahead to its bowl game to close the season.
