ISU Studies Grass-Powered Energy's Potential

Researchers at Iowa State University, led by landscape ecologist Lisa Schulte Moore, have explored converting perennial grass into renewable natural gas to benefit farmers financially and address environmental concerns. This six-year study investigates how planting prairie grass can help reduce soil erosion, fertilizer runoff, and greenhouse gas emissions.

Two peer-reviewed articles by Schulte Moore's team analyzed the economic feasibility of grass-to-gas production. One study modeled a network of anaerobic digesters in Ames that could use livestock manure, biofuel byproducts, and food waste to produce renewable natural gas, showing it to be economically viable. Another study focused on the Grand River Basin, projecting a combined profit of $400 million over 20 years with an 83% lower carbon footprint than fossil fuel-derived natural gas.

Funded by federal grants and the Walton Family Foundation, this research aims to create sustainable, cost-effective energy solutions that benefit farmers, businesses, and municipalities.
