Iowa State Soccer 2024 Season Preview with Coach Fannon
The 2024-25 Iowa State athletics calendar kicks off this week with the Cyclone soccer team, led by coach Matt Fannon. The Cyclones host Western Illinois on Thursday, Aug. 15, at 6 p.m. at the Cyclone Soccer Complex.
Roster and Staff Changes
Coach Fannon enters his fifth year optimistic about the team's potential despite significant roster changes. The squad welcomes seven new players and two new assistant coaches. Key departures include Cyclone legends Mira Emma and Salomé Prat, whose production will be challenging to replace. However, newcomers like Yira Yoggerst, Seulgi Lee, and Morgan Furmaniak are expected to fill the gaps. Returning players such as Avery Gillahan, Olivia Edwards, Lauren Hernandez, and Chloe Broughton will provide a solid foundation for the team.
Adapting Playstyle and Schedule
Fannon plans to adjust the team's playstyle, possibly shifting between a 3-4-3 and a 4-3-3 formation to maintain possession and control games. With a school-record 12 home matches, the Cyclones aim to make their home field a fortress, enhancing their chances for a postseason berth. They will face tough away matches against ranked teams like BYU and Texas Tech and prepare for the challenges posed by new league entrants, Utah and Colorado.
