Campbell Downplays Milestone as Iowa State Prepares for Big 12 Opener

Iowa State Cyclones football head coach Matt Campbell enters the field with his team before the game against Arkansas State

Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell could surpass Dan McCarney as the winningest coach in program history with a victory over Houston on Saturday, but he’s not focused on personal accolades. Instead, Campbell emphasizes the challenge of Big 12 play, especially as the Cyclones (3-0) prepare for their conference opener.

ISU enters conference play following a 52-7 win over Arkansas State, where the Cyclones excelled in all phases. The offensive line returned key players, contributing to a season-high 237 rushing yards. Defensively, the team recorded four sacks and four takeaways.

As they head to Houston, Campbell stresses that winning in the Big 12 is tough, and last season’s 1-8 conference record after a 3-0 start serves as a reminder that nothing is guaranteed.

Kickoff against Houston is set for 6 p.m. Saturday on FS1.

Cyclones Unbeaten in Singles, Kuearum Advances at ITA Championships

Iowa State tennis had a strong showing on Saturday as Anna Supapitch Kuearum advanced at the ITA All-American Championships and six Cyclones secured singles victories at the K-State Invitational.

Kuearum defeated USC’s Lilly Fairclough 6-4, 6-4 in Cary, North Carolina, and will face East Tennessee State’s Daniela Rivera on Sunday for a spot in the Round of 32.

In Manhattan, Kansas, the Cyclones posted a perfect 6-0 record in singles, with wins from Ashlee Narker, Cristina Ramos Sierra, Valeska San Martin Ramirez, Julia Camblor, Mari Paz Alberto Vilar, and Suzanie Pretorius.

Iowa State also won two out of three doubles matches, with Narker and Ramos remaining unbeaten on the weekend.

Cyclones Fall 1-0 to No. 21 Colorado

Iowa State's upset bid against No. 21 Colorado fell short, as the Cyclones lost 1-0 on Sunday in Ames. Despite a strong defensive effort, ISU (3-5-2, 1-1 Big 12) couldn’t keep Colorado (9-1, 3-0 Big 12) from scoring a late goal.

Goalkeeper Avery Gillahan had a standout performance, recording nine saves, but the Buffaloes' Emerson Layne netted the game-winning goal in the 74th minute.

The Buffaloes dominated offensively, outshooting ISU 24-4, with 11 shots on goal to ISU’s zero. Despite a few late chances, the Cyclones couldn’t find the equalizer.

Iowa State will hit the road next to face Utah on Thursday, Sept. 26, at 8 p.m.
