Iowa State University invites visitors to its exhibit at the 2024 Iowa State Fair to experience "Cyclone Vision," featuring 360-degree videos that highlight unique campus experiences. Fairgoers can virtually climb the Campanile, join the Cyclone football huddle, explore the Fashion Show, tour Reiman Gardens, and more.

Visitors can scan QR codes with their smartphones to access the videos. The exhibit will be open daily from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the Varied Industries Building from August 8-18. Cy, Iowa State’s mascot, will make appearances, and the University Book Store will offer Cyclone merchandise for sale.

Additionally, 4-H youth activities will take place each day in the Bruce L. Rastetter 4-H Exhibits Building, featuring livestock shows, a fashion show, and educational presentations. Iowa State veterinary students will also be on-site, caring for fair animals and participating in the Governor's Charity Steer Show on August 10.

Engineers Use Data to Manage Grid Transformers, Boosting Reliability

This distribution transformer is one of about 5,500 across the city of Ames. Iowa State's Zhaoyu Wang and his collaborators are developing a data-based system to better manage the important links between the power grid and homes, farms and businesses.

Next time you pass small green utility boxes near homes or businesses, note they’re distribution transformers. These boxes, crucial for stepping down high-voltage electricity to safer levels, are facing increasing demand and higher costs.

Iowa State University professor Zhaoyu Wang and his team have a solution. With a $1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy, they aim to transition from reactive maintenance to proactive monitoring using data from smart meters. This approach will help utilities predict transformer failures and optimize maintenance, enhancing grid reliability and reducing costs.

By leveraging machine learning and SparkMeter’s AI-driven platform, utilities can monitor transformer health in real time, ensuring a more reliable power supply for consumers.

Fannon Adds Seulgi Lee to 2024 Roster

ISU head soccer coach Matt Fannon has announced the addition of Seulgi Lee to the 2024 roster. Lee, a 5-8 senior midfielder, transfers to Ames after stints at Barton Community College and Michigan Tech. At Barton CC, she became the school's first two-time NJCAA All-America recipient and was named the region's MVP in 2021. Despite an injury at Michigan Tech, Lee earned All-Midwest Region Second Team and First Team All-Conference honors in 2023, helping her team reach the NCAA Tournament.

Coach Fannon expressed enthusiasm for Lee's arrival, citing her ability to seamlessly integrate into the team. Lee joins fellow transfers Morgan Furmaniak, Adelaide Wolfe, Yira Yoggerst, and Ella Zimmerman. The Cyclones kick off the 2024 season with an exhibition game against Minnesota on August 7 at the Cyclone Sports Complex, with the official season opener against Western Illinois on August 15. Admission is free.

William West served as the mayor of Ames, Iowa, from 1870-1871. He was the proprietor of the West Hotel. Before moving to Iowa, West was a legislator in Ohio. According to early Ames pioneer C.E. Taylor, West was childhood friends with future President General Ulysses S. Grant.
