Parks & Recreation Seeks Input on CIP

The City of Ames Parks and Recreation Department is seeking public input for its 2025-2030 Capital Improvements Plan (CIP). Residents are encouraged to attend a session at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 11, at the Homewood Golf Course Clubhouse to discuss ongoing and potential projects. The CIP is funded through local sales tax, donations, and grants, with an average of $1 million allocated annually for projects.

Iowa State Mourns Loss of Hall of Famer Mike Stensrud

Iowa State football legend Mike Stensrud, a standout defensive lineman and key player on two bowl teams, passed away at age 68.

Stensrud, a two-time First Team All-Big Eight selection, was known for his dominance on the field, amassing 306 career tackles, 34 tackles for loss, and nine forced fumbles during his time at ISU from 1974-78. He played a pivotal role in the Cyclones' success, helping the team secure bowl appearances in 1977 and 1978.

Following his stellar college career, Stensrud was drafted by the Houston Oilers in 1979 and enjoyed an 11-year NFL career. He was inducted into the Iowa State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2000.

Stensrud's legacy continues through his family's connection to ISU football, including his son Andy, who played for the Cyclones from 1997-2000.

Cyclones Celebrate Victory Day at Jack Trice Stadium

Friday night at Jack Trice Stadium was filled with excitement as the Cyclone football program hosted its annual Victory Day Celebration, welcoming the upcoming season. The event brought together over 60 children with disabilities who enjoyed participating in drills and scoring touchdowns alongside Cyclone players. Highlights included performances by the Cyclone Spirit Squad and the Iowa State Football Varsity Marching Band. It was a memorable evening that showcased the Cyclones' dedication to community engagement and inclusivity.

Abby Jones is a Strategist I Teacher at Ames Middle School. Jones became a teacher after a middle school counselor showed her care, compassion, and resilience, inspiring her to do the same for students.
