(Answer at the bottom of the newsletter)

Dotson Drive Opening Monday; Beedle Drive Intersection Partially Closed

Starting Monday, July 1, the south half of the Lincoln Way and Beedle Drive intersection in Ames will close for pavement removal and replacement, while the Dotson Drive intersection at Lincoln Way will reopen, but without left turns onto Lincoln Way. The shared-use path on the south side of Lincoln Way will remain closed from Beedle Drive to Marshall Avenue, with cyclists advised to use Lincoln Way Swing and Beedle Drive, and pedestrians to use the sidewalk on the north side of Lincoln Way. The Beedle Drive intersection work is expected to take two weeks. The City of Ames has contracted Con-Struct for the reconstruction of Lincoln Way from Beedle Drive to Franklin Avenue, including utility improvements and the shared-use path reconstruction. More information is available at CityOfAmes.org/LincolnWay.

Iowa State Women's Basketball to Play National Champion South Carolina on Thanksgiving

The Iowa State women's basketball team, riding high on the success of their previous season, is set to face a significant early challenge in the 2024-25 campaign. The Cyclones will compete against the defending national champion South Carolina in the 2024 Elevance Health Women's Fort Myers Tip-Off at Suncoast Credit Union Arena on Thanksgiving, November 28.

In addition to this marquee matchup, Iowa State will face Middle Tennessee State for the first time in program history on November 30. Game times and broadcast details will be announced later.

This season opener is a crucial test for Iowa State, which reached the Big 12 Tournament championship game and earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament last season, narrowly missing the Sweet 16. With top scorers Audi Crooks, Addy Brown, and Emily Ryan returning, the Cyclones have high expectations for an even better season.

Meet Camryn Johnson: The Urbandale Softball Transfer Sparking Ames

Junior shortstop Camryn Johnson has been a huge addition to the Ames softball program in 2024.

Camryn Johnson, a talented softball player, transferred from Urbandale to Ames before the 2023-24 school year. She moved in with her best friend, Josie Theilen, after deciding she needed a change of scenery. The pair has been inseparable since playing club softball together at age 11. Johnson has seamlessly taken over the shortstop position, impressing her coach and teammates with her strong fielding and versatility. Offensively, she’s hitting .392 and recently hit a crucial walk-off homer against Fort Dodge.

Johnson’s move has provided a significant boost to the Ames team, which is aiming for its first state tournament appearance. The duo's chemistry on and off the field has been pivotal in their success. Ames, currently ranked No. 14 in 5A, has several key games ahead, including a matchup against Urbandale. If they make it to the state tournament, Johnson and Theilen plan to celebrate with their team at Panda Express.
