The Maidens have returned to Iowa State University's "Fountain of the Four Seasons" after extensive conservation and replication efforts. The four statues were removed in November 2022 and sent to Vermont, where they were replicated in Indiana limestone, the same material originally used by artist Christian Petersen in 1941.
These replicas have now been placed back at the fountain outside the Memorial Union. The Maidens had endured over 80 years of outdoor exposure, leading to significant deterioration.
An unveiling event is scheduled for noon on Wednesday, Aug. 7, near the north entrance of the Memorial Union. A public dedication will follow on Oct. 4 at 1:30 p.m.
ISU Engineers Develop High-Speed AI Technology for Catalytic Reactions
Iowa State University researchers, led by Qi An, have developed a cutting-edge AI technology called High-Throughput Deep Reinforcement Learning with First Principles (HDRL-FP) to improve understanding of catalytic reactions like ammonia production. This new method can optimize reaction pathways, potentially reducing production costs and CO₂ emissions. The technology identifies optimal reaction mechanisms quickly and automatically, using reinforcement learning and atomic positions.
This innovative approach not only aids in studying ammonia synthesis but also has broader applications for various complex chemical reactions, offering a promising tool for future research and discoveries.
