Free COVID-19 Tests and Vaccinations Available in Ames
Starting the week of Sept. 30, households can order four free COVID-19 rapid at-home tests via COVIDTests.gov. These tests offer results within 30 minutes and can be used until the end of the year.
The CDC recommends everyone aged six months and older receive the updated COVID-19 vaccine to reduce the risk of severe illness. Vaccinations are available at local pharmacies such as CVS, Hy-Vee, Walgreens, Walmart, Medicap, NuCara, and the Thielen Student Health Center. Visit vaccines.gov to find the nearest locations.
Additionally, flu clinics will be held at Parks Library on Oct. 15 and Oct. 29, where students can receive vaccinations. To book an appointment or for walk-in options, contact Thielen Student Health at (515) 294-5801.
New Municipal Engineer Joins Ames Public Works Department
Mindy Bryngelson has been appointed as the new Municipal Engineer for the City of Ames. She began her role on Sept. 30, succeeding Tracy Peterson, who served in the position for 20 years. Bryngelson, a graduate of Iowa State University with a degree in civil engineering, previously held the role of Executive Vice President at Clapsaddle-Garber Associates. In her new position, she will manage the engineering division, overseeing street maintenance, traffic control, construction projects, and infrastructure planning.
Ames Fire Station Open House Set for Oct. 12
The Ames Fire Department will host its annual Fire Station Open House at Fire Station No. 1, 1300 Burnett Ave., on Saturday, Oct. 12, from 9 a.m. to noon. The event will feature fire truck displays, station tours, and educational activities promoting fire safety. A modified open house from 8 to 9 a.m. will be available for individuals with autism or disabilities.
This year's Fire Prevention Week theme is "Smoke Alarms: Make them work for you!" Ames firefighters will also visit local elementary schools and hold a coloring contest for second graders.

Iowa State Announces 2024-25 Track and Field Schedule
Iowa State has finalized its 2024-25 indoor and outdoor track and field schedule. The indoor season begins Dec. 7 at the BU Sharon Colyear-Danville Opener, with ISU hosting four home meets, including the ISU Holiday Invite (Dec. 13-14) and the Bill Bergan Open (Jan. 17). The Big 12 Indoor Championships will take place Feb. 28-29, followed by the NCAA Indoor Championships March 14-15.
Outdoor season kicks off March 22 at the Charles Austin Invite, and includes highlights like the Drake Relays (April 23-26) and Big 12 Outdoor Championships (May 28-31). The NCAA Championships will be held June 11-14 in Eugene, Oregon.
Cyclones Picked Second in Big 12 Preseason Poll, Crooks Named to All-Big 12 Team
Iowa State women’s basketball has been picked to finish second in the Big 12 for the 2024-25 season, narrowly trailing preseason favorite Kansas State in a poll of conference coaches. The Cyclones, coming off a runner-up finish at the 2024 Big 12 Championships, received one first-place vote.
Sophomore Audi Crooks earned unanimous selection to the All-Big 12 Preseason Team after an outstanding freshman season, where she averaged 19.2 points and 7.8 rebounds, leading all Division I freshmen in shooting percentage.

Apprentice to Employment: Gracie Boon’s Journey
Through a partnership between Boone Community School District and Mary Greeley Medical Center (MGMC), Boone High School graduate Gracie Boon completed her Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) training via the Boone EDGE program. Now employed full-time in the Oncology Department at MGMC, Gracie’s journey highlights the success of the Iowa Health Career Apprenticeship grant, which connects local students with healthcare careers. Gracie plans to continue her education to become a registered nurse, supported by MGMC’s apprenticeship pathway.
