Free Food and Essentials Available to Students and Ames Community

As Thanksgiving approaches, it’s vital to remember those struggling with homelessness and food insecurity. November is National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Month, highlighting these challenges and encouraging support.

In Ames, The Bridge Home provides shelter and resources to help individuals and families find stability. Similarly, ISU’s SHOP food pantry offers students and community members free food and hygiene essentials, ensuring dignity and respect for all.

Both organizations rely on community support through donations and funding. This holiday season, consider helping those in need by contributing food, hygiene items, or monetary support. Together, we can make a difference.

Proposed Increases to Housing and Dining Prices

Iowa State University officials proposed a 5% increase in dining prices and a 6% increase in housing rates for the upcoming fiscal year. These increases are intended to cover essential maintenance and renovations, with no additional profits being pocketed. The funds will support projects like restroom renovations in Friley and other residence halls and air conditioning installations in several dorms. Rising food costs and inflation also contribute to the proposed rate hikes. The university’s Department of Residence and Dining, which relies on student payments, aims to ensure a high-quality experience for residents and diners.

StuGov and Ames City Council Discuss Cyclone Welcome Weekend and Downtown Engagement

During their bi-annual meeting, the Iowa State Student Government and the Ames City Council discussed Cyclone Welcome Weekend and efforts to enhance downtown engagement. Ames Police Chiefs reported fewer incidents during Cyclone Welcome Weekend this year, though concerns remain about recurring party houses. They also noted the challenge of non-students contributing to issues during events. The council discussed downtown development, including attracting businesses like Raising Cane’s and increasing public parking accessibility. Several new senators were also sworn in, and funding for TREND Magazine was approved.

Cyclones Claim Runner-Up Finish at NCAA Championships

The Iowa State men's cross country team secured a runner-up finish at the NCAA Championships, their second in four years. The Cyclones had four runners earn All-America honors, the most since 1994.

Robin Kwemoi Bera and Said Mechaal led the Cyclones in the top 20, while Ruto and Sanele Masondo rallied to finish in the top 30. ISU scored 137 points, falling just 13 points shy of team champion BYU.

All seven Cyclones finished in the top 100, marking a standout performance for the program.
