Gov. Reynolds to Propose Classroom Cellphone Ban in Ames and Across Iowa
Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds announced plans to propose legislation banning cell phones in classrooms, emphasizing the need for students to focus on learning. Details of the proposal will be shared during her Condition of the State address in January.
“Students deserve a distraction-free environment in which to engage fully in their education,” said Mason Mauro, spokesperson for the governor.
Iowa Researcher: ‘Hardening’ Schools Won’t Stop Violence, Experts Say

Researchers in Ames argue that increasing police presence in schools doesn’t reduce classroom violence. Iowa State University’s Monic Behnken suggests that addressing the root causes—like providing access to therapists, counselors, and social workers—would be more effective. While school shootings capture media attention, Behnken points out that they remain rare and that School Resource Officers (SROs) have minimal impact on preventing violence. However, they can be helpful in schools dealing with issues like drugs or gangs.

Cyclones Fall to Auburn in Thrilling Finish at Maui Invitational
No. 5 Iowa State suffered its first loss of the season in a nail-biter against No. 4 Auburn, 83-81, in the Maui Invitational's opening round. Keshon Gilbert led the Cyclones with 23 points, including key free throws in the final minute. Despite holding a 16-point halftime lead, Iowa State couldn’t withstand Auburn's second-half comeback, capped by Johni Broome's game-winning tip-in with 1.2 seconds left.
Gilbert and Curtis Jones both reached the 1,000-career-point milestone in the game. Iowa State (3-1) will face the loser of No. 12 North Carolina and Dayton in the consolation round on November 26 at 7:30 p.m. on ESPNU.
Rocco Becht Named Manning Award Star of the Week

Becht threw for 256 yards and a touchdown, marking his 15th consecutive game with a passing TD, a school record.
Fans can vote for Becht as the Manning Award Quarterback of the Week by Wednesday at 9 a.m. (CT). The Cyclones close the regular season against Kansas State on Saturday, Nov. 30, at 6:30 p.m. on FOX.
Crooks’ Game-Winner Seals Cyclones Victory Over Bulldogs
Despite a stellar 39-point performance from Drake's Katie Dinnebier, No. 8 Iowa State edged out an 80-78 victory on Sunday, thanks to a game-winning layup by Audi Crooks. Crooks finished with a dominant 33 points, including the decisive basket Emily Ryan and Addy Brown set up in the final moments.
The Cyclones improved to 5-1, bouncing back from a loss to UNI. With this hard-fought win, Iowa State builds momentum ahead of their Thanksgiving clash against No. 1 South Carolina.
