Groundbreaking for New Townhomes at Creekside Set for Sept. 10

The public is invited to attend the groundbreaking ceremony for โ€œTownhomes at Creekside,โ€ a new affordable housing development, at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 10, at 3216 Tripp St., Ames. Developed by Hatch Kiernan Galloway Development in partnership with the City of Ames, the project will feature 38 multi-family rental units and 26 single-family homes, offering a mix of affordable and market-rate options. Mayor John Haila will represent the City at the event.

The Baker Subdivision project aims to increase affordable housing in Ames, with some homes featuring geothermal energy systems for lower utility costs. The City has also partnered with Habitat for Humanity to build affordable single-family homes on eight lots.

Families experiencing pregnancy, postpartum, or life with babies and toddlers are invited to attend the Parenting Circle at the Library! Facilitated by experienced mothers, these meetups provide support, connection, and answers about birth, postpartum, and parenthood.

Meetup Details:

  • When: 2nd Friday and 4th Saturday of each month

  • Next Meetup: September 13

  • Time: 9:30-10:30 a.m.

  • Where: Teen Space at the Library

Open House for Ames Water Wells Project Scheduled for Sept. 18

Ames residents are invited to an open house about the new water wells under construction at North River Valley Park. The event will take place from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 18, at the Ames Water Treatment Plant, 1800 E. 13th St. A brief program will be held at 5:15 p.m.

The project involves the addition of two new water wells to the cityโ€™s existing 22, ensuring an adequate water supply for Ames' growing population. These wells will connect to the Water Treatment Plant through underground pipes and fiber optic communication lines. The project is expected to be completed by October 2025.

For safety, visitors to North River Valley Park should avoid the construction zone.

Iowa State Football Back in National Rankings

Iowa State football has climbed back into the national rankings after a 20-19 come-from-behind victory over No. 21 Iowa in the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series. The Cyclones are now ranked No. 21 in the AP poll and No. 23 in the AFCA Coaches Poll, marking their first Top 25 appearance since October 2021.

The Cyclones, now 2-0, head into their bye week before hosting Arkansas State on September 21 for Hall of Fame Weekend, where six former athletes, including Super Bowl champion Kelechi Osemele, will be inducted. Tickets for the game start at $40.

Cyclonitas Start 2024-25 Season at ANNIKA Intercollegiate

Iowa State's women's golf team kicks off the 2024-25 season at the ANNIKA Intercollegiate in Lake Elmo, Minn., led by Pammy Chookaew, Karisa Chul-Ak-Sorn, and Keeley Marx. Chul-Ak-Sorn, a Big 12 Champion, returns after leading the team with a 71.85 stroke average last season, the second-lowest in program history. Chookaew, the Big 12 runner-up, ranks sixth in school history with a 73.98 career stroke average. Marx, who competed in the US Open, will also bolster the squad.

The Cyclones, who qualified for their 14th consecutive NCAA Regional last season, aim to continue their streak of top-10 finishes in season openers.

Ames CSD Board Meeting

The school board will hold a regular meeting and a work session on Monday, September 9 starting at 5:30 pm.

Marley Turk took first at the 2024 Kirk Schmaltz Invitational in Ames, following up a Claire Helmers gold a year prior. Lauren Risdal also records a top-10 finish at 5th individually to help the girls team finish 5th in a field that included seven ranked opponents.

Boys team landed in 6th in the standings behind Brennen Bhave's 7th-place individual finish, cutting a full minute from last year's event.
