Yi-Yu Wang, a graduate research assistant at the Ames National Laboratory-led Institute for Cooperative Upcycling of Plastics (iCOUP), and her team are working on converting non-recyclable plastic into valuable chemicals and fuels. Funded by the U.S. Department of Energy, iCOUP developed a one-step catalytic process to break down plastic polymers into specific chemicals efficiently. This innovation aims to address the growing plastic waste problem and produce eco-friendly alternatives to diesel, aviation fuel, and lubricants. The team’s lab-made products have shown promising results, such as cleaner diesel and effective lubricants. Future plans include scaling up the process and collaborating with cities like Ames to integrate these fuels into programs like the city's biodiesel initiative. The team is also seeking venture capital and grants to further commercialize their technology.
