Iowans Report Illness After Eating Mushroom-Infused Treats: What to Avoid

Some people became ill after eating Diamond Shruumz-brand products.

Iowans and others across the country have fallen ill after consuming Diamond Shruumz mushroom-infused treats. The U.S. FDA, along with the CDC and other health agencies, are advising against consuming these products following multiple illness reports.

Symptoms and Cases: Consumers reported symptoms such as seizures, loss of consciousness, confusion, agitation, abnormal heart rates, nausea, and vomiting. Initially, the FDA, in collaboration with the CDC and America’s Poison Centers, began investigating eight illnesses from four states, six of which required hospitalization. As of June 17, 26 illnesses across 16 states have been reported, with 25 seeking medical care and 16 hospitalized. No deaths have been reported.

Impact in Iowa: An unspecified number of Iowans have become sick, with some in critical condition after consuming Diamond Shruumz’s cookies and cream chocolate bars or fruit cereal-flavored bars.

Product Distribution and Recommendations: Diamond Shruumz products are typically sold in hemp retailers, tobacco stores, and vape shops. Due to their unregulated status, they cannot be recalled, but the FDA is in discussions with the company about a potential voluntary recall.

The FDA advises consumers to avoid and discard any Diamond Shruumz chocolate bars, cones, or gummies, and retailers are instructed to hold these products securely until further notice. Parents and caregivers should discuss the risks with their children and ensure these products are not consumed.

If Illness Occurs: Anyone who becomes ill after consuming these products should contact their healthcare provider or call the Poison Help Line at 1-800-222-1222, informing them of the recent consumption of Diamond Shruumz products. Health care providers are encouraged to report these cases to local health departments or the Poison Help Line.
