Story County Veteran honored after atomic bomb testing gave him cancer
Ames resident James Despard, a Marine Corps veteran of Operation Plumbbob in the 1950s, was exposed to radiation while witnessing four atomic bomb tests in the Nevada desert. This exposure led to a long battle with prostate cancer, which he continues to fight today.
