Fall Startup Pitch Winners Announced at Finale Event

Olivia Burrough’s addresses water quality issues and proposes creating a fertilizer treatment, winning her first place at the Fall Startup Pitch Competition, Oct. 15, 2024.

Olivia Burrough and Jonathan Duron took first place in their respective categories during the Fall Startup Pitch Finale, hosted by the ISU Pappajohn Center for Entrepreneurship. Burrough won in the "new idea" category with her eco-friendly algae-based fertilizer concept, while Duron secured the "existing business" category for his TagLink NFC system that helps mechanics track repair orders. Each received a $3,000 prize. Caleb Frostestad earned an honorable mention for UdderX, a wireless sensor system for monitoring newborn calves.

Math Minds Unite at the Library - October 20

Looking for math help for 3rd-8th graders? Join Math Minds Unite at the Ames Public Library on Sunday, October 20, from 1:30-4:30 PM. Kids can solve problems, play games, and have fun reinforcing math concepts. No registration required.

Iowa State Students Shine at M-Shop's Open Mic Night

Open Mic Night at the Maintenance Shop gives Iowa State students the chance to showcase their talents in front of an encouraging crowd. From singing and comedy to musical theater and original songs, the event features diverse performances. Regulars and first-timers alike enjoy the supportive atmosphere. Participants are already excited for future events, including the next themed night with a Halloween costume contest. It’s a great way to connect with peers and enjoy a fun Tuesday night.

Iowa Public Radio to Host On-Campus Election Panel at Memorial Union

Iowa Public Radio’s "Politics Day on the Road" will be held on campus at the Memorial Union this Thursday at 6 p.m. Hosted by Ben Kieffer of IPR’s "River to River" and co-host Cleo Westin, editor-in-chief of the Iowa State Daily, the panel will explore student voting perspectives. Panelist Karen M. Kedrowski, director of the Carrie Chapman Catt Center for Women and Politics, will join the discussion. The event, targeting undecided young voters, offers voter registration through the “CyclonesVote” program.

Campbell Named to Bear Bryant Coach of the Year Watch List

Iowa State head football coach Matt Campbell has been named to the 2024 Paul "Bear" Bryant Coach of the Year Award watch list. The award honors college football coaches who exemplify leadership, grit, and integrity on and off the field.

Campbell has led No. 9 Iowa State to its first 6-0 start since 1938, making the Cyclones bowl eligible for the seventh time in nine seasons. He also became ISU's all-time winningest coach this season.

The award will be announced on January 22, 2025, in Houston.

September Student-Athletes of the Month Announced

Iowa State has named Tyler Claiborne (Football), Bella Heikes (Cross Country/Track and Field), Daniel Herrera (Wrestling), and Aziza Rodriguez (Softball) as its September Student-Athletes of the Month. All four athletes have excelled both in their sports and academically, earning multiple Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll accolades while contributing significantly to their respective teams.

Gonzalez to Miss Rest of Season Due to Knee Injury

Iowa State outside hitter Nayeli Gonzalez will miss the remainder of the 2024 season after suffering a left knee injury during last week's match at Houston. Gonzalez will undergo surgery next week and begin her recovery, with hopes of returning to play next year. Despite battling injuries, the sophomore had a standout season with 127 kills in 11 matches, including a career-high 18 kills against Iowa. Gonzalez earned multiple honors as a freshman, including Big 12 Rookie of the Year and Honorable Mention All-American.

Bastida Added to NWCA All-Star Classic Lineup

Iowa State heavyweight Yonger Bastida has been added to the 2024 NWCA All-Star Classic on Nov. 16, where he’ll face Ohio State’s No. 3 Nick Feldman. Bastida, ranked No. 6 by FloWrestling, joins teammate Evan Frost (133) at the event, held at Penn State’s Rec Hall. Both wrestlers are among the top 10 in their weight classes, and Bastida previously defeated Feldman in a 13-5 major decision last season. The event, showcasing top Division I matchups, will be streamed on FloWrestling.
