Iowa State University Sets Record with $544.6 Million in Research Funding

Iowa State University achieved a new milestone in research funding for the fiscal year 2024, securing a record $544.6 million, up from $530.5 million the previous year. This marks the third consecutive year of record-breaking research funding and the second consecutive year surpassing $300 million.
The university's research efforts attracted $346.2 million in external funding, the highest ever recorded, driven by substantial increases in both federal and non-federal support. Federal funding reached a record $236.3 million, while non-federal support hit $110 million.
Iowa State's President Wendy Wintersteen highlighted this achievement as a testament to the university's growing prominence as a research powerhouse. Vice President for Research Peter Dorhout emphasized the importance of this funding in advancing innovation and addressing societal challenges.
Notable funded projects include:
A $14 million National Science Foundation grant for windstorm research led by Professor Partha Sarkar.
A $1.8 million U.S. Department of Energy grant for a solar farm and agrivoltaics study led by Professor Ajay Nair.
Nearly $10.6 million from Roeslein Alternative Energy for renewable natural gas research under Professor Lisa Schulte Moore.
A $2.5 million Department of Energy grant for cybersecurity research on wind and solar farms, led by Professor Manimaran Govindarasu.

Cyclones Volleyball Earns AVCA Team Academic Award for Fifth Consecutive Year
The Iowa State volleyball team has been honored with the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award for the fifth year in a row, and the eighth time since the award's inception in the 1992-93 season. Under the leadership of Christy Johnson-Lynch, the Cyclones have consistently achieved academic excellence.
For the 2023-24 academic year, the team maintained an impressive cumulative GPA of 3.43. Their fall semester GPA was 3.51, while their spring GPA was 3.34. To qualify for the AVCA Team Academic Award, teams must uphold a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher.
Ames Softball Season Ends with Loss to Top-Ranked Valley
The Ames softball team faced a tough end to their season with a 12-0 defeat to No. 1 West Des Moines Valley in the Class 5A Region 1 championship game. The match was cut short to just three innings as Valley showcased their offensive strength with three home runs and a dominant performance.
Despite the loss, Ames concluded their season with a solid 23-18 record, marking their fourth consecutive year with at least 20 wins and a third straight appearance in the regional finals. Senior Katie Riesselman broke up Valley pitcher Alexa Stevermer's perfect game with a single in her final at-bat.
Coach Meghan Von Behren praised her team’s unity and resilience, highlighting the significant contributions from players like Josie Theilen and the younger talent stepping up throughout the season. With only two graduating seniors and a promising roster for 2025, Ames is poised to build on their success and aim for a state tournament berth.
Riesselman, heading to North Iowa Area Community College, expressed her excitement to follow her teammates' progress next season.
