Researchers Explore 3D Printing for Nuclear Reactors
Iowa State University's Sougata Roy has secured a $1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to investigate using 3D printing to create tungsten components for nuclear reactors. Tungsten is favored for its durability under extreme conditions but is expensive and difficult to process. Roy's team will experiment with laser powder-blown directed-energy deposition to 3D print tungsten alloys, aiming to make it more affordable for reactor applications. The research involves collaboration with national labs and universities, utilizing both experimental and computational methods to optimize tungsten's properties for use in fusion reactors.
