Iowa State's Horticulture Research Station to Host Inaugural Prairie Field Day

Rachel Sents, '24 horticulture, spent the past eight months securing funding to aid in the management of the remnant and reconstruction prairies.

The Iowa State University Horticulture Research Station is hosting its inaugural Prairie Field Day on July 16, 2024. The event will feature tours of three prairie projects at the station: a remnant prairie, a reconstructed prairie, and a prairie seed production project. Attendees will learn about the environmental benefits of prairies, including carbon sequestration and soil preservation. The event includes guest speakers such as experts from the Iowa Prairie Network, Iowa State University, Drake University, and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. Registration closes on July 9, and participants are advised to wear long pants and boots for walking through tall grass and uneven terrain.

Hannah Belanger to Begin Pro Career with WINGS Leverkusen

 

Hannah Belanger, an Iowa State women’s basketball alum, has signed with WINGS Leverkusen to kick off her professional career. Belanger joined Iowa State for one season after a stellar four-year stint at Truman State. During her time with the Cyclones, she played in all 33 games, starting in 32, and averaged 9.3 points, 1.8 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game, shooting nearly 39 percent from three-point range. Her collegiate career boasts 2,189 points and 368 made triples.

"We are all excited for Hannah as she signs her professional contract. In one year, she made a huge impact on and off the court at Iowa State," said Iowa State women's basketball head coach Bill Fennelly. "It is exciting to see this dream of hers become a reality."

Belanger will move overseas in August, with WINGS starting regular season play on September 30.

Iowa State football has produced several notable NFL players, with Matt Blair (1974-85), Keith Sims (1990-2000), Marcus Robertson (1991-2002), Kelechi Osemele (2012-20), and Brock Purdy (2022-23) standing out. Blair had a decorated career with the Minnesota Vikings, earning six Pro Bowl selections. Sims protected Dan Marino and earned multiple Pro Bowl nods. Robertson was a steady defensive presence and is now a coach. Osemele won a Super Bowl and was a dominant guard, while Purdy has quickly made a name for himself as a quarterback.
