Iowa State University Creamery: Reviving a Historical Tradition
Iowa State University’s creamery, originally established in 1881, has been revitalized to offer fresh, farm-made dairy products. After closing in 1969, the creamery reopened in 2020, providing hands-on training for students and short courses for entrepreneurs. The creamery produces and sells cheese and ice cream, using milk from local farms. It also serves as a primary fundraiser for the Dairy Science Club.
Students from diverse majors, including food science, aerospace engineering, and public relations, work at the creamery, gaining practical experience in production and customer service. The creamery also offers tours to showcase its history and production processes.

Excessive Rainfall Threatens Iowa Crop Yields After Year-Long Drought
Following nearly a year-long drought, Iowa farmers are now contending with excessive rainfall that is jeopardizing crop yields. The Iowa Crop Progress and Condition report indicates that early July brought unseasonably high rainfall, with many areas experiencing over 150% of normal precipitation.
Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig expressed hope for warmer, dryer weather to help crops recover. At a field day at Kittleson Bros farmland, farmer Steve Rachut highlighted the challenges posed by heavy rain to his onion and potato crops. The excessive moisture has caused yellowing in some plants, with standing water threatening root damage.
The event, sponsored by Practical Farmers of Iowa, showcased the resilience of the Kittleson farm's peat soil and its contributions to local markets. Education coordinator Jacqueline Venner Senske emphasized the benefits of diverse crop landscapes for community and environmental resilience.

Entering his ninth season, Matt Campbell, one of the longest-tenured coaches in the Big 12, leads a veteran Iowa State team with high expectations. Despite limited resources compared to powerhouse programs, Campbell has consistently built competitive teams, highlighted by an 88-63 overall record as a head coach.
With no distractions this season, Campbell is optimistic, especially with the return of standout players like quarterback Rocco Becht, running back Abu Sama, and wide receivers Jaylin Noel and Jayden Higgins. Defensive strength is also anticipated, led by J.R. Singleton on the line and senior safety Beau Freyler. Ranked sixth in the Preseason Big 12 Media Poll, Campbell aims to surpass expectations and make a significant impact in the expanded league.
