Iowa Swine Day Set for July 25 in Ames

Pork producers and others involved with swine production can learn the most current information on emerging critical industry topics at Iowa Swine Day, July 25 at the Iowa State Center in Ames. (ISU Extension and Outreach)

Join pork producers and swine industry professionals at Iowa Swine Day on July 25 at the Iowa State Center in Ames. Organized by the Iowa Pork Industry Center at Iowa State University, this event features renowned speakers discussing critical industry topics.

The day includes a morning plenary session, lunch, and four concurrent topical sessions covering current topics, on-farm labor improvement, herd health protection, and Iowa State research. Sessions will be recorded and available on the Pork Center’s YouTube channel.

A preconference symposium on July 24, from 12:30-5 p.m. at the Scheman Building, will focus on "Soybean Meal 360" with eight expert speakers. Attendees can also enjoy a swine networking social at 5:30 p.m. at the Hansen Agriculture Student Learning Center.

Registration is $85, free for students, with preregistration strongly encouraged. For more information and registration, visit the Iowa Swine Day conference website.

Garden Art Fair Showcases Local Talent at Reiman Gardens This Sunday

Over 80 local artists will showcase their work at Reiman Gardens' Garden Art Fair this Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Enjoy a variety of handmade art, including paintings, jewelry, pottery, yard ornaments, and blown glass.

Hy-Vee’s food truck will offer coffee, donuts, and lunch items. Entry is free for Reiman Gardens members and ISU students, with a $2 discount for non-members.

Niang and Joens Named to Inaugural Big 12 Alumni Council

Former Iowa State basketball stars Georges Niang and Ashley Joens have been selected for the inaugural Big 12 Alumni Council. This 32-member council includes former student-athletes from each Big 12 institution and aims to leverage their expertise as the conference evolves.

Niang, a two-time All-American and 2016 Karl Malone Award winner, has played eight NBA seasons, scoring over 3,000 points in 465 games. He led Iowa State to four NCAA Tournaments and back-to-back Big 12 Championships in 2014 and 2015.

Joens, a four-time All-American, is the leading scorer in Iowa State women's basketball history with 3,060 points. She was a three-time Cheryl Miller Award winner and led the Cyclones to four NCAA Tournaments, including a 2022 Sweet 16 appearance.

Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark emphasized the value of alumni insights as the conference expands to 16 teams in August 2024. Council members will receive networking opportunities, league support for community initiatives, media engagements, and VIP access to Big 12 events. The Council will be overseen by Yormark and VP of Communications & Strategy Clark Williams.
