Ames Prepares for 801 Day Celebrations

With the return of Iowa State University students at the end of August, the city of Ames is gearing up for the annual 801 Day on August 24. Named after the time 8:01 a.m., when the prohibition on alcohol is lifted at fraternities and sororities, this day has become an unofficial but problematic partying tradition.
Why 801 Day Is Problematic
In recent years, 801 Day has drawn crowds beyond the student population, including visitors from outside Ames. Issues include underage drinking, fights, excessive noise, public intoxication, and other inappropriate activities.
Enhanced Penalties
To mitigate these issues, the Ames City Council has implemented enhanced penalties for nuisance parties from 5 p.m. on August 23 until 4 a.m. on August 25. Fines are set at $650 for the first offense and $855 for repeat offenses. Vehicles parked illegally on specific streets will be towed immediately on August 24.
Preparation Efforts
The city is taking proactive measures to inform the community about these penalties. The Police Department and ISU staff will conduct door-to-door notifications during the Good Neighbor Campaign in early August. Emails will be sent to property managers, owners, and neighborhood associations. Signs and electronic messages will be placed in affected areas to emphasize parking regulations.
Iowa's Tax-Free Weekend: August 2-3

Iowa’s annual sales tax holiday is back, offering families a chance to save on back-to-school shopping. From 12:01 a.m. on Friday, August 2, to midnight on Saturday, August 3, clothing and shoes under $100 will be exempt from the state’s 6-7% sales tax.
Eligible Items: underclothes, sneakers, coats, jackets, belts, jeans, diapers, work uniforms, costumes, bridal apparel.
Non-Eligible Items: items over $100, backpacks, garment bags, watches, jewelry, umbrellas, clothing repairs, sporting equipment.
Online purchases meeting the criteria are also tax-exempt if ordered and paid for during the holiday period.
Shopping Tips:
Plan Ahead: List major clothing and shoe purchases.
Set a Budget: Stick to your planned budget.
Compare Prices: Check sales circulars and online stores for deals.
Be Prepared: Expect busy shopping.
