Ames Parks Winter Preparations

With freezing temperatures expected, Ames Parks and Recreation will shut down drinking fountains and restrooms starting Tuesday, October 15, as part of winterization efforts. Parks and Facilities Superintendent Joshua Thompson noted that unheated restrooms cannot withstand freezing conditions, leading to potential pipe bursts.

Water services will be restored in the spring when temperatures allow. The last day to reserve park shelters is October 15; thereafter, they will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Ames parks remain open year-round, but visitors should exercise caution due to winter hazards like snow and ice. Indoor programs will continue throughout winter at the Community Center, Ames/ISU Ice Arena, and Homewood Golf Course Clubhouse.
