Ames Enhances Traffic Flow with Intelligent Transportation System
Starting Oct. 28, Ames will implement its Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) along key roads, including Grand Avenue, South Fourth Street, and Duff Avenue. The project, aimed at improving traffic efficiency, involves installing fiber-optic connections for synchronized traffic signals. The adaptive signal technology will adjust signal timing based on real-time traffic volume, reducing idling and enhancing travel flow. Supported by an Iowa Clean Air Attainment Program grant, the ITS installation will continue through winter, optimizing traffic over the coming years.

Iowa State University students rallied on Oct. 24 against the impacts of Iowa Senate File 2435, which restricts funding for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs in public universities. The protest highlighted the importance of DEI initiatives for marginalized students and raised awareness about potential losses, including vital community spaces on campus. ISU students and local organizations urged the Iowa Board of Regents to preserve these programs. The Board will review plans for DEI compliance at its November meeting.
Ames Resident Satisfaction Survey Highlights Community Confidence
At Tuesday’s meeting, the Ames City Council reviewed the results of the 2024 Ames Resident Satisfaction Survey, which had a 95% confidence rate from its 450 respondents. Key findings indicate strong approval of city services, with 96% rating them as “good” or “very good.” New priorities for sustainable projects ranked high, while street repairs remained the top priority. The Council also approved upgrades for the Ames/ISU Ice Arena heating system and a $65 million loan for water and pollution control improvements.

Cyclones Prepare for Showdown with Nebraska
Iowa State swimming and diving (2-0) heads to Lincoln to face Nebraska (1-2) on Friday for their third meet of the season. This marks the 50th matchup between the Cyclones and Huskers, a series dating back to 1972.
The Cyclones dominated South Dakota last week, taking 13 of 16 events. Senior Carley Caughron excelled with wins in the 50 free, 100 free, and 100 fly, while junior Corinne Guist claimed victories in the 500 and 1000 free events. In diving, Kate Mitchell took both the 1-meter and 3-meter titles.
After Nebraska, Iowa State will compete in the Hawkeye Invitational from Nov. 21-23 in Iowa City.
Cyclones Face Baylor in Season-Defining Match
Iowa State will battle Baylor this night in a high-stakes showdown to secure a Big 12 Championship spot. The Cyclones, who need a win to qualify, aim for their 200th program victory and seek to break their winless streak in Big 12 play. Senior Morgan Furmaniak and top scorer Magdalena Keck will lead the offense, while keeper Avery Gillahan, with five shutouts this season, anchors the defense.
Baylor enters needing only a win or draw to advance, adding extra tension to the matchup. Led by standout Tyler Isgrig, the Bears bring a balanced attack to Ames, averaging 13 shots per game. Friday's outcome will determine which team secures a postseason berth in the Big 12 Soccer Championship, which begins on October 30.
CyCast: Paul Shirley Reflects on ISU Legacy
Former Iowa State basketball standout Paul Shirley joins the latest CyCast episode to discuss his memorable career with the Cyclones. Shirley, an All-Big 12 selection in 2001 and key member of ISU’s back-to-back Big 12 championship teams (2000-01), went on to a nine-year pro career, including three seasons in the NBA. Now a successful author of four books, Shirley will return to Ames in January with former teammates for the 25th anniversary of their Big 12 title wins.
