City of Ames Seeks Entries for Water and Pollution Control Art Contest
The City of Ames Water and Pollution Control Department is now accepting entries for its 2024-25 Public Art Contest and Exhibition. Artists may submit up to three pieces of two-dimensional artwork based on the theme “Water in Nature.” Submissions will be accepted from Sept. 30 through Jan. 10, 2025. Selected pieces will be displayed from Feb. 24 to March 14, 2025, and awards include “Best in Show” ($400), “People’s Choice” ($200), and “Most Likable” ($100).

24th Street Railroad Crossing to Close for Two Weeks Starting Oct. 7
Starting Monday, Oct. 7, all lanes of 24th Street will be closed at the railroad crossing for two weeks to allow for track approach removal and replacement. Union Pacific Railroad will also extend the crossing to connect the sidewalk on the north side. While 24th Street will remain open west of the railroad, motorists should detour via Bloomington Road and Grand Avenue. Pedestrians and cyclists can use the shared-use path, which will remain open. This marks the final phase of the Stange Road and 24th Street reconstruction project.
Host Families Needed for Japanese Student Delegation in October
The Ames International Partner Cities Association (AIPCA) is seeking host families for middle school students from Koshu City, Japan, arriving in October. Families are needed to provide accommodations, meals, and cultural experiences for the students from Oct. 13 to Oct. 18. This is an opportunity to foster cultural exchange and lasting connections between Ames residents and the Japanese delegation.

ISU to Honor 2000 and 2001 Men's Basketball Teams
Iowa State Athletics will honor the historic 1999-2000 and 2000-01 men’s basketball teams during a special reunion and halftime recognition on Jan. 4 against Baylor. These teams, led by standout players like Marcus Fizer and Jamaal Tinsley, brought ISU back-to-back Big 12 regular-season titles, marking a significant moment in Cyclone basketball history.
The 1999-2000 season saw ISU earn its first conference title in 55 years, followed by a run to the Elite Eight in the NCAA Tournament. The 2000-01 team continued the success, securing another Big 12 championship.
Fans are encouraged to join in recognizing these Cyclone legends on Jan. 4 at Hilton Coliseum.
Cyclones Win Big 12 Opener Against WVU
Iowa State (7-5, 1-0 Big 12) defeated West Virginia (6-7, 0-2 Big 12) in a five-set thriller, winning 25-14, 25-15, 18-25, 23-25, 17-15. The Cyclones dominated the first two sets, but WVU fought back to force a deciding set, where ISU secured the victory.
Amiree Hendricks-Walker led the Cyclones with a career-high 18 kills, hitting .593. Lilly Wachholz added 16 kills, and Maya Duckworth had 10. Morgan Brandt tallied 44 assists, and Brooke Stonestreet had 26 digs.
ISU will host Cincinnati on Wednesday, October 2, at 6:30 p.m.
Cyclones Secure Finals Spots in Singles and Doubles at Jon Messick Invitational
Iowa State dominated day two of the Jon Messick Invitational, securing every Flight A finals spot in both singles and doubles. The pairs of Anna Supapitch Kuearum/Ashlee Narker and Cristina Ramos Sierra/Julia Camblor advanced to the doubles Flight A final, while Kuearum and Narker also reached the singles Flight A final.
Kuearum won a tough singles match in three sets, while Narker advanced due to an injury withdrawal. In Flight C singles, Camblor reached the final after a hard-fought win. Despite some setbacks in other flights, the Cyclones head into Sunday's finals in a strong position.
