KFC officially announces return to Ames

KFC, historically known as Kentucky Fried Chicken, has confirmed plans to open a new restaurant in north Ames, near the North Grand Mall, at 2615 Grand Avenue, on a site previously occupied by a US Bank branch. Construction is set to begin in September, with the restaurant expected to open by January and employ around 20 people. The store will operate daily from 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.

The announcement marks KFC's return to Ames after the closure of its former location at 509 Lincoln Way, which was replaced by a Starbucks.

Ames' $4 Million Schainker Plaza Set to Open in October

Work is still being done at Schainker Plaza (seen here on Sept. 4, 2024), though it is expected to be finished in October. Celia Brocker/Ames Tribune

The $4 million Steven L. Schainker Plaza in Ames, named after the long-serving city manager, is expected to open next month following several delays. The development, located across from Ames City Hall, faced setbacks, including issues with the ice-skating rink's concrete surface.

Henkel Construction, the project's contractor, confirmed that all work except for the rink would be completed by October 1. The plaza will feature interactive water elements, landscaped green spaces, public art, restrooms, and an ice-skating rink. The remaining landscaping work is anticipated to be finished by October 18.

Mayor John Haila expressed optimism about the project's progress, emphasizing the goal of completing it by November 1.
