Enhanced Penalties for Nuisance Parties and Illegal Parking This Weekend in Ames

As Iowa State University gears up for the new school year, the Ames City Council has implemented temporary measures to manage public safety concerns during the bustling weekend of August 23-25.

Illegal parking during this weekend has posed risks by obstructing emergency vehicle access. To address this, the council approved immediate towing for vehicles parked illegally on Saturday, August 24, from midnight to 11:59 p.m. in specified areas of Ames. These include:

  • Lincoln Way between Beach Avenue and State Street

  • State Street between Lincoln Way and Mortensen Avenue

  • Mortensen Avenue between State Street and Beach Avenue

  • Beach Avenue between Mortensen Avenue and Lincoln Way

The area will be marked with bright green reminder signs to alert motorists. Additionally, the city has introduced stricter fines for nuisance parties, with penalties starting at $650 for the first offense and increasing to $855 for repeat offenses, effective from 5 p.m. on Friday, August 23, to 4 a.m. on Sunday, August 25.

Chief of Police Geoff Huff stated, "We aim for a safe and positive start to the school year, focusing on community events and responsible fun."

Lane Closures on Pearle Avenue and Main Street for Sewer Repairs Starting Monday

Starting Monday, August 19, at 7:30 a.m., Pearle Avenue will be closed to southbound traffic at Fifth Street, and Main Street will be closed to westbound traffic at Pearle Avenue due to sanitary sewer repairs. The closures are expected to last until Thursday, August 22, weather permitting.

City crews discovered damage to a sewer main during routine maintenance, necessitating the repair. Traffic delays are possible in the construction zone, and motorists are advised to use detours. Intermittent lane restrictions will remain until the road surface is fully restored. Drivers are urged to slow down and exercise caution.

This closure will affect CyRide buses. Please visit www.CyRide.com for any route changes.
