Alliance for Disability Awareness Advocates for Change
The Alliance for Disability Awareness (ADA), led by President Cat Phelps, is working to support Iowa State’s disabled community and address challenges in accessibility. Phelps highlights issues such as legal hurdles in securing academic accommodations and accessibility concerns with CyRide.
Students must navigate complex processes to qualify for accommodations, often needing to reapply each semester, even for permanent disabilities. Misunderstandings with professors add to these struggles, though Student Accessibility Services offers support.
Despite obstacles, ADA strives to foster communication between the university and disabled students, advocating for accountability, simpler processes, and greater inclusion. Phelps encourages students and faculty to collaborate, emphasizing the need for shared understanding and progress.
ISUPD Cracks Down on Rolling Stop Violations with Fines
The Iowa State Police Department (ISUPD) has taken action after a significant increase in rolling stop violations on campus, issuing 207 traffic stops in 2024 for failing to fully stop at stop signs. This marks a rise of 146 violations from the previous year.
To address the issue, new signs have been placed at stop signs across campus, warning drivers of the $210.25 fine for rolling stops. ISUPD Chief Michael Newton explained that the department continues to receive complaints about campus driving behavior.
The top locations for violations include Union Drive, Pammel Drive, and Bissel Road. According to Iowa law, drivers must come to a complete stop at intersections with stop signs, ensuring they yield to any oncoming traffic before proceeding.
While excessive speed violations have decreased in 2024, the number of rolling stop violations has surged, prompting the ISUPD to remind drivers of the legal requirements and consequences for noncompliance.
